The theme of warning against divisions is a significant aspect of New Testament teachings, emphasizing the importance of unity within the body of Christ. The apostle Paul, in particular, addresses this issue in several of his epistles, urging believers to maintain harmony and avoid discord.

1 Corinthians 1:10-13
In his first letter to the Corinthians, Paul directly addresses the issue of divisions within the church at Corinth. He writes, "I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree together, so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be united in mind and conviction" (1 Corinthians 1:10). Paul highlights the problem of factions forming around different leaders, such as himself, Apollos, and Cephas, and reminds the Corinthians that Christ is not divided. This passage underscores the call for unity and the rejection of sectarianism within the church.

Romans 16:17-18
In his letter to the Romans, Paul issues a stern warning against those who cause divisions. He writes, "Now I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who create divisions and obstacles that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Turn away from them" (Romans 16:17). Paul identifies such individuals as serving their own appetites rather than Christ, using smooth talk and flattery to deceive the hearts of the naive. This admonition serves as a caution to the church to be vigilant and discerning, protecting the community from those who would disrupt its unity.

Ephesians 4:1-6
Paul's letter to the Ephesians further elaborates on the theme of unity. He exhorts believers to "walk in a manner worthy of the calling you have received, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, and with diligence to preserve the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace" (Ephesians 4:1-3). Paul emphasizes the oneness of the body of Christ, grounded in one Lord, one faith, and one baptism. This passage highlights the virtues necessary for maintaining unity and the theological foundation that undergirds the church's oneness.

Philippians 2:1-4
In his letter to the Philippians, Paul appeals to the believers to be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. He writes, "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves" (Philippians 2:3). Paul encourages the Philippians to look not only to their own interests but also to the interests of others, fostering a spirit of selflessness and mutual concern that is essential for unity.

Titus 3:9-11
Paul advises Titus to avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, arguments, and quarrels about the law, as they are unprofitable and useless. He instructs, "Reject a divisive man after a first and second admonition, knowing that such a man is corrupt and sinful; he is self-condemned" (Titus 3:10-11). This directive underscores the need for church leaders to address divisiveness decisively, protecting the community from those who persist in causing strife.

James 3:13-18
The epistle of James also addresses the issue of discord, contrasting earthly wisdom, which leads to disorder and every evil practice, with the wisdom from above, which is "first of all pure, then peaceable, gentle, accommodating, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and sincere" (James 3:17). James highlights the fruit of righteousness that is sown in peace by those who make peace, reinforcing the call for harmony and the rejection of divisive behavior.

The New Testament's consistent warning against divisions reflects the high value placed on unity within the Christian community. Believers are called to cultivate a spirit of humility, love, and peace, grounded in the shared faith and lordship of Jesus Christ.
