The Bible consistently addresses the theme of pride, offering numerous warnings to those who harbor a haughty spirit. Pride is often depicted as a sin that leads to downfall and separation from God. The Scriptures emphasize humility as a virtue and caution against the dangers of pride.

Old Testament Warnings

The Old Testament provides several examples and teachings on the perils of pride. In Proverbs 16:18, it is written, "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." This verse succinctly captures the inevitable downfall that follows pride. The account of King Uzziah in 2 Chronicles 26 serves as a narrative illustration of this principle. Uzziah's pride led him to unlawfully enter the temple to burn incense, resulting in his affliction with leprosy.

The prophet Isaiah also warns against pride, particularly in Isaiah 2:11-12: "The proud look of man will be humbled, and the loftiness of men will be brought low; the LORD alone will be exalted in that day. For the Day of the LORD of Hosts will come against all the proud and lofty, against all that is exalted—it will be humbled." Here, the prophet speaks of a future time when God will judge the proud and exalt Himself above all.

New Testament Warnings

The New Testament continues to address the issue of pride, often contrasting it with the humility exemplified by Jesus Christ. In James 4:6, it is stated, "But He gives us more grace. This is why it says: 'God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.'" This passage highlights the opposition that the proud face from God, while the humble receive His grace.

Jesus Himself taught about the dangers of pride in His parables and teachings. In Luke 18:9-14, the Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector illustrates the contrast between pride and humility. The Pharisee's self-righteousness and pride are condemned, while the humble tax collector is justified before God.

The Apostle Paul also addresses pride in his epistles. In Romans 12:3, he advises, "For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but think of yourself with sober judgment, according to the measure of faith God has given you." Paul encourages believers to maintain a humble perspective, recognizing their dependence on God's grace.

Consequences of Pride

The Bible outlines several consequences for those who persist in pride. Proverbs 29:23 warns, "A man's pride will bring him low, but a humble spirit will obtain honor." Pride leads to disgrace and downfall, while humility results in honor and exaltation.

In the spiritual realm, pride creates a barrier between individuals and God. Psalm 138:6 states, "Though the LORD is on high, He attends to the lowly; but the proud He knows from afar." This verse underscores the distance that pride creates between God and the proud, contrasting it with the closeness He shares with the humble.

Call to Humility

Throughout Scripture, believers are called to embrace humility and reject pride. Micah 6:8 encapsulates this call: "He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?" Walking humbly with God is presented as a fundamental requirement for a righteous life.

The ultimate example of humility is found in Jesus Christ, as described in Philippians 2:5-8. Believers are encouraged to adopt the mindset of Christ, who "humbled Himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross." This passage serves as a powerful reminder of the humility that God desires from His followers.
