Worldly Behavior

Worldly behavior refers to actions, attitudes, and lifestyles that are aligned with secular values and desires rather than with the teachings and principles found in the Bible. This concept is often contrasted with godly behavior, which seeks to honor and obey God. The Bible provides numerous warnings and teachings regarding the dangers and consequences of adopting worldly behavior.

Biblical Warnings Against Worldly Behavior

The Bible frequently cautions believers against conforming to the patterns of this world. In Romans 12:2, the Apostle Paul exhorts, "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God." This verse highlights the importance of renewing one's mind to resist worldly influences and to discern God's will.

James 4:4 provides a stark warning about the spiritual implications of worldly behavior: "You adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore, whoever chooses to be a friend of the world renders himself an enemy of God." This passage underscores the incompatibility between friendship with the world and loyalty to God.

Characteristics of Worldly Behavior

Worldly behavior is often characterized by a focus on materialism, sensuality, pride, and self-indulgence. The Apostle John warns against these desires in 1 John 2:15-16: "Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not from the Father but from the world."

The "desires of the flesh" refer to the pursuit of physical pleasures and indulgences that are contrary to God's commands. The "desires of the eyes" involve covetousness and the longing for material possessions. The "pride of life" encompasses arrogance and self-exaltation, often at the expense of humility and submission to God.

Consequences of Worldly Behavior

The Bible teaches that worldly behavior leads to spiritual death and separation from God. In Galatians 5:19-21, Paul lists the "acts of the flesh," which include sexual immorality, idolatry, hatred, and envy, among others. He warns, "I warn you, as I did before, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God."

Furthermore, worldly behavior can lead to a hardened heart and a seared conscience, making it difficult for individuals to respond to the Holy Spirit's conviction. In Ephesians 4:17-19, Paul describes the futility of a mind darkened by worldly influences, leading to a life of impurity and greed.

The Call to Holiness

Believers are called to live lives that are set apart from the world, reflecting the holiness of God. In 1 Peter 1:14-16, Peter urges, "As obedient children, do not conform to the passions of your former ignorance. But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do, for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy.'"

This call to holiness involves a conscious decision to reject worldly behavior and to pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, as instructed in 2 Timothy 2:22: "Flee from youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, together with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart."

Overcoming Worldly Behavior

Overcoming worldly behavior requires reliance on the Holy Spirit, who empowers believers to live according to God's will. Galatians 5:16 encourages, "So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh." By walking in the Spirit, believers can resist the temptations of the world and cultivate the fruit of the Spirit, which includes love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).

Additionally, believers are encouraged to immerse themselves in God's Word, which serves as a guide and a source of strength in resisting worldly influences. Psalm 119:11 states, "I have hidden Your word in my heart that I might not sin against You." Through prayer, fellowship with other believers, and a commitment to spiritual disciplines, Christians can maintain a lifestyle that honors God and stands in contrast to worldly behavior.
