The term "worthies" is often used to describe individuals in the Bible who are noted for their exceptional faith, courage, and leadership. These figures are celebrated for their significant contributions to the unfolding narrative of God's people and His divine plan. The concept of worthies is closely associated with the idea of being esteemed or honored for one's righteous deeds and steadfast faith.

Old Testament Worthies

1. Abraham: Known as the father of faith, Abraham is a central figure in the Old Testament. His unwavering trust in God is exemplified in Genesis 15:6, "Abram believed the LORD, and it was credited to him as righteousness." Abraham's willingness to obey God's command to sacrifice his son Isaac (Genesis 22) further underscores his status as a worthy.

2. Moses: As the deliverer of Israel from Egyptian bondage, Moses is revered for his leadership and faithfulness. He is credited with receiving the Law from God on Mount Sinai, guiding the Israelites through the wilderness, and interceding on their behalf. His worthiness is highlighted in Deuteronomy 34:10, "Since that time, no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face."

3. David: The shepherd boy who became king, David is celebrated for his heart after God. His victory over Goliath (1 Samuel 17) and his psalms of worship and repentance illustrate his deep relationship with God. Despite his failings, David's worthiness is affirmed in Acts 13:22, "I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart; he will do all My will."

4. Daniel: Known for his unwavering faith in the face of persecution, Daniel's life is marked by his commitment to prayer and integrity. His deliverance from the lion's den (Daniel 6) and his prophetic visions further establish his status as a worthy.

New Testament Worthies

1. John the Baptist: As the forerunner of Christ, John the Baptist is recognized for his bold proclamation of repentance and the coming Messiah. Jesus Himself acknowledges John's worthiness in Matthew 11:11, "Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist."

2. Peter: One of Jesus' closest disciples, Peter is known for his leadership in the early church and his bold witness for Christ. Despite his initial denial of Jesus, Peter's restoration and subsequent ministry highlight his worthiness. In Acts 2, Peter's sermon at Pentecost leads to the conversion of thousands.

3. Paul: Formerly Saul of Tarsus, Paul's transformation from persecutor to apostle is a testament to God's grace. His missionary journeys and epistles have profoundly shaped Christian theology and practice. Paul's worthiness is evident in his declaration in 2 Timothy 4:7, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."

Hebrews 11: The Hall of Faith

Hebrews 11 is often referred to as the "Hall of Faith," listing numerous worthies who exemplified faith in action. This chapter highlights figures such as Abel, Enoch, Noah, and Rahab, among others. Hebrews 11:1 defines faith as "the assurance of what we hope for and the certainty of what we do not see," and the chapter concludes with a reminder that these worthies "were all commended for their faith" (Hebrews 11:39).

Conclusion

The worthies of the Bible serve as exemplars of faith and obedience, inspiring believers to live lives of righteousness and devotion to God. Their accounts remind us of the enduring impact of a life lived in faithful service to the Lord.

WORTHIES

wur'-thiz ('addir, "majestic," "noble" (compare Judges 5:13, etc.)):In Nahum 2:5, the King James Version "He shall recount his worthies" (margin "gallants"), the English Revised Version "He remembereth his worthies," the American Standard Revised Version "He remembereth his nobles." As Massoretic Text stands, the Assyrian king hurriedly summons his commanders to repel the assault, but the passage is obscure and the text quite possibly in need of emendation.
