He is mentioned in both the Old and New Testaments, and his life serves as an example of faith and righteousness. Biblical References: Enoch is first introduced in the genealogies of Genesis. He is the seventh generation from Adam, the son of Jared, and the father of Methuselah. Genesis 5:18-24 : "When Jared was 162 years old, he became the father of Enoch. And after he had become the father of Enoch, Jared lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. So Jared lived a total of 962 years, and then he died. When Enoch was 65 years old, he became the father of Methuselah. And after he had become the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters. So Enoch lived a total of 365 years. Enoch walked with God, and then he was no more, because God took him away." Walked with God: The phrase "walked with God" signifies a deep, intimate relationship with the Creator. Enoch's life was marked by faithfulness and obedience, setting him apart from his contemporaries. His walk with God is a testament to his righteousness and devotion. Translation to Heaven: Enoch's departure from the earth is unique. The Bible states, "he was no more, because God took him away" (Genesis 5:24). This implies that Enoch did not experience death in the traditional sense but was taken directly into God's presence. This event foreshadows the concept of eternal life and the hope of believers being taken to be with the Lord. New Testament References: Enoch is mentioned in the New Testament as an exemplar of faith. Hebrews 11:5 : "By faith Enoch was taken up so that he did not see death: 'He could not be found, because God had taken him away.' For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God." This passage in Hebrews highlights Enoch's faith as the reason for his translation, emphasizing that his life was pleasing to God. Jude 1:14-15 : "Enoch, the seventh from Adam, also prophesied about them: 'Behold, the Lord is coming with myriads of His holy ones to execute judgment on everyone, and to convict all the ungodly of every ungodly act of wickedness and every harsh word spoken against Him by ungodly sinners.'" Jude attributes a prophecy to Enoch, indicating his role as a prophet who spoke of God's coming judgment. This reference underscores Enoch's spiritual insight and his place in the biblical narrative as a herald of divine truth. The Book of Enoch: While not part of the canonical Bible, the Book of Enoch is an ancient Jewish text that expands on Enoch's life and visions. It is considered apocryphal by most Christian traditions but provides additional context to Enoch's character and the spiritual themes associated with him. Legacy and Significance: Enoch's life and translation have inspired theological reflection on the nature of faith, righteousness, and the hope of eternal life. His example encourages believers to walk closely with God, trusting in His promises and living in anticipation of His return. ATS Bible Dictionary Enoch1. A son of Cain, in honor of whom the first city named in the Bible was called Enoch, Genesis 4:17. 2. "The seventh from Adam," and the father of Methuselah; eminent as a patriarch who lived near to God, through faith in a Redeemer to come, Hebrews 11:5,13. It was a testimony to his rare piety in an ungodly age that he was translated without seeing death, like Elijah. He had lived only three hundred and sixty years, Genesis 5:18-24 Jude 1:14,15, quotes a traditionary prophecy of Enoch, showing his belief in a judgment to come. There is an apocryphal book bearing the name of Enoch, in which similar language occurs. It was probably written by some devout Christian of the first century, and is only valuable for the light it throws on the belief of the early church. It was never received as canonical. Easton's Bible Dictionary Initiated. (1.) The eldest son of Cain (Genesis 4:17), who built a city east of Eden in the land of Nod, and called it "after the name of his son Enoch." This is the first "city" mentioned in Scripture. (2.) The son of Jared, and father of Methuselah (Genesis 5:21; Luke 3:37). His father was one hundred and sixty-two years old when he was born. After the birth of Methuselah, Enoch "walked with God three hundred years" (Genesis 5:22-24), when he was translated without tasting death. His whole life on earth was three hundred and sixty-five years. He was the "seventh from Adam" (Jude 1:14), as distinguished from the son of Cain, the third from Adam. He is spoken of in the catalogue of Old Testament worthies in the Epistle to the Hebrews (11:5). When he was translated, only Adam, so far as recorded, had as yet died a natural death, and Noah was not yet born. Mention is made of Enoch's prophesying only in Jude 1:14. International Standard Bible Encyclopedia ENOCHe'-nok (chanokh, "initiated"; Henoch): ENOCH (CITY) In Genesis 4:17 it is narrated that Cain, who had taken up his abode in the land of Nod, East of Eden (verse 16), built there a city, and called it after the name of his firstborn son Enoch. It is impossible to fix more definitely the locality of this first of cities, recorded, as Delitzsch says (Genesis, in the place cited.), as registering an advance in civilization. The "city" would be a very simple affair, a place of protection for himself, wife and household, perhaps connected with the fear spoken of in Genesis 4:14. BOOK OF ENOCH See ENOCH, BOOK OF.
