Overcoming the World

1Every one who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been begotten of God; and every one who loves Him Who begat loves him also that has been begotten of Him. 2In this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and do His commandments. 3For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome; 4because all that has been begotten of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that overcomes the world, our faith.

5And who is he that overcomes the world, but he that believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 6This is He Who came through water and blood, Jesus Christ; not in the water only, but in the water and in the blood. 7And the Spirit is He Who beareth witness, because the Spirit is the Truth: 8because there are Three Who bear witness; the Spirit, and the water, and the blood; and the Three agree in one.

God’s Testimony about His Son

9If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater; because this is the testimony of God, that He hath testified concerning His Son. 10He that believes on the Son of God has the witness in himself; he that believes not God has made Him a liar; because he has not believed in the testimony that God testified concerning His Son. 11And this is the testimony, that God gave to us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12He that has the Son has the life; he that has not the Son of God has not the life.

Effective Prayer

13These things I wrote to you who believe on the name of the Son of God, that ye may know that ye have eternal life. 14And this is the confidence which we have toward Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He heareth us; 15and, if we know that He heareth us whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions which we asked of Him.

16If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin not to death, he shall ask, and God will give him life for those that sin not to death. There is a sin to death: I do not say that he shall make request concerning this. 17All unrighteousness is sin; and there is a sin not to death.

The True God

18We know that every one who has been begotten of God sins not; but he who was begotten of God keeps himself, and the evil one touches him not. 19We know that we are of God, and the whole world is lying in the evil one. 20And we know that the Son of God hath come, and hath given us understanding, that we may know the True One: and we are in the True One?in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the True God, and eternal life.

21Little children, guard yourselves from idols.
