2 Samuel 23
1. David, in his last words, professes his faith in God's promises
6. The different state of the wicked
8. A catalogue of David's mighty men

Zalmon the Ahohite
Zalmon is listed among David's mighty warriors, a group of elite soldiers who played a crucial role in establishing and securing David's kingdom. The term "Ahohite" likely refers to his clan or family lineage, possibly connected to Ahoah, a descendant of Benjamin (1 Chronicles 8:4). This connection to the tribe of Benjamin is significant, as it highlights the unity and diversity within David's army, drawing from various tribes of Israel. The inclusion of Zalmon in this list underscores the importance of loyalty and valor in service to God's anointed king, David, who is a type of Christ as the ultimate King and Shepherd of His people.

Maharai the Netophathite
Maharai is another of David's mighty warriors, and his designation as a "Netophathite" indicates his origin from Netophah, a town near Bethlehem in the tribal territory of Judah. This geographical detail emphasizes the regional diversity of David's supporters, as Netophah was a small, relatively obscure location. Maharai's inclusion in this elite group highlights the biblical theme that God often chooses the humble and seemingly insignificant to accomplish His purposes. This reflects the broader biblical narrative where God raises up individuals from humble beginnings, much like David himself, who was a shepherd boy before becoming king. Maharai's role in David's army also points to the unity and strength found in God's people when they rally around His chosen leader.

Teaching Points
The Importance of Loyalty and Valor
Zalmon and Maharai exemplify loyalty and courage. Their inclusion in the list of David's mighty men highlights the importance of steadfastness and bravery in serving God's anointed leader.

God's Use of Ordinary People
Both men, though not widely known, played crucial roles in David's kingdom. This teaches us that God can use anyone, regardless of their background or fame, to accomplish His purposes.

Community and Brotherhood in Service
The mighty men were a community of warriors who supported each other and their king. This reflects the importance of fellowship and unity in the body of Christ.

Legacy of Faithfulness
Being remembered as part of David's mighty men shows the lasting impact of faithfulness and dedication. Our actions and service for God can leave a legacy that endures beyond our lifetime.(28) Zalmon.--In Chronicles Ilai.

Maharai.--He commanded the tenth division of the army (1Chronicles 27:13).

Verse 28. - Zalmon. He is called Ilai in 1 Chronicles 11:29. Ahohite (see note on ver. 9). Maharai the Netophathite. Netophah, in the neighbourhood of Jerusalem (Ezra 2:22), was chiefly inhabited, after the exile, by the singers (Nehemiah 12:28). Robinson identifies it with Beit-Netif, to the south of Jerusalem; but probably erroneously, as Beit-Netif is too far from Bethlehem. Maharai was commander of the tenth brigade, and was a Zarhite, and therefore belonged to the tribe of Judah.
