Preparations for the Temple

1  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) דָּוִ֔יד (David), זֶ֣ה (This) ה֔וּא (is) בֵּ֖ית (the house) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים (God), וְזֶה־ (and this is) מִּזְבֵּ֥חַ (the altar) לְעֹלָ֖ה (of burnt offering) לְיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ס (for Israel).

2  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And commanded) דָּוִ֔יד (David) לִכְנוֹס֙ (to gather) אֶת־ (-) הַגֵּרִ֔ים (the sojourners) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (who were) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), וַיַּעֲמֵ֣ד (and he appointed) חֹֽצְבִ֗ים (hewers) לַחְצוֹב֙ (to hew) אַבְנֵ֣י (stones) גָזִ֔ית (cut) לִבְנ֖וֹת (to build) בֵּ֥ית (the house) הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ (of God).

3  וּבַרְזֶ֣ל׀ (And iron) לָ֠רֹב (in abundance) לַֽמִּסְמְרִ֞ים (for the nails) לְדַלְת֧וֹת (of the doors) הַשְּׁעָרִ֛ים (of the gates) וְלַֽמְחַבְּר֖וֹת (and for the joints) הֵכִ֣ין (provided) דָּוִ֑יד (David), וּנְחֹ֥שֶׁת (and bronze) לָרֹ֖ב (in abundance) אֵ֥ין (without) מִשְׁקָֽל׃ (weight), 4  וַעֲצֵ֥י (and trees) אֲרָזִ֖ים (cedar) לְאֵ֣ין (in) מִסְפָּ֑ר (abundance), כִּֽי (for) הֵ֠בִיאוּ (brought) הַצִּֽידֹנִ֨ים (the Sidonians) וְהַצֹּרִ֜ים (and the Tyrians) עֲצֵ֧י (trees) אֲרָזִ֛ים (cedar) לָרֹ֖ב (in abundance) לְדָוִֽיד׃פ (to David).

5  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) דָּוִ֗יד (David), שְׁלֹמֹ֣ה (Solomon) בְנִי֮ (my son) נַ֣עַר (is young) וָרָךְ֒ (and inexperienced), וְהַבַּ֜יִת (and the house) לִבְנ֣וֹת (to be built) לַיהוָ֗ה (for YHWH) לְהַגְדִּ֨יל׀ (magnificent), לְמַ֜עְלָה (shall be exceedingly) לְשֵׁ֤ם (famous) וּלְתִפְאֶ֙רֶת֙ (and glorious) לְכָל־ (throughout all) הָ֣אֲרָצ֔וֹת (the lands). אָכִ֥ינָה (I will make preparation) נָּ֖א (now) ל֑וֹ (for it). וַיָּ֧כֶן (And made preparations) דָּוִ֛יד (David) לָרֹ֖ב (in abundance) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face of) מוֹתֽוֹ׃ (his death).

Solomon Anointed to Build the Temple

6  וַיִּקְרָ֖א (And he called) לִשְׁלֹמֹ֣ה (for Solomon) בְנ֑וֹ (his son), וַיְצַוֵּ֙הוּ֙ (and he commanded him) לִבְנ֣וֹת (to build) בַּ֔יִת (a house) לַיהוָ֖ה (for YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֥י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ס (of Israel).

7  וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) דָּוִ֖יד (David) לִשְׁלֹמֹ֑ה (to Solomon), בְּנוֹ (My son), אֲנִי֙ (as for me), הָיָ֣ה (it was) עִם־ (in) לְבָבִ֔י (my mind) לִבְנ֣וֹת (to build) בַּ֔יִת (a house) לְשֵׁ֖ם (for the Name) יְהוָ֥ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהָֽי׃ (my God). 8  וַיְהִ֨י (And came) עָלַ֤י (to me) דְּבַר־ (the word) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), דָּ֤ם (Blood) לָרֹב֙ (in abundance) שָׁפַ֔כְתָּ (you have shed), וּמִלְחָמ֥וֹת (and wars) גְּדֹל֖וֹת (great) עָשִׂ֑יתָ (you have made). לֹֽא־ (Not) תִבְנֶ֥ה (you shall build) בַ֙יִת֙ (a house) לִשְׁמִ֔י (for My name), כִּ֚י (because) דָּמִ֣ים (blood) רַבִּ֔ים (much) שָׁפַ֥כְתָּ (you have shed) אַ֖רְצָה (on the earth) לְפָנָֽי׃ (before My face). 9  הִנֵּה־ (Behold), בֵ֞ן (a son) נוֹלָ֣ד (shall be born) לָ֗ךְ (to you). ה֤וּא (He) יִהְיֶה֙ (shall be) אִ֣ישׁ (a man) מְנוּחָ֔ה (of rest), וַהֲנִח֥וֹתִי (and I will give rest) ל֛וֹ (to him) מִכָּל־ (from all) אוֹיְבָ֖יו (his enemies) מִסָּבִ֑יב (round about). כִּ֤י (For) שְׁלֹמֹה֙ (Solomon) יִהְיֶ֣ה (shall be) שְׁמ֔וֹ (His name), וְשָׁל֥וֹם (and peace) וָשֶׁ֛קֶט (and quietness) אֶתֵּ֥ן (I will give) עַל־ (to) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) בְּיָמָֽיו׃ (in his days). 10  הֽוּא־ (He) יִבְנֶ֥ה (shall build) בַ֙יִת֙ (a house) לִשְׁמִ֔י (for My Name), וְהוּא֙ (and he) יִהְיֶה־ (shall be) לִּ֣י (unto Me) לְבֵ֔ן (son), וַאֲנִי־ (and I will be) ל֖וֹ (unto him) לְאָ֑ב (Father). וַהֲכִ֨ינוֹתִ֜י (And I will establish) כִּסֵּ֧א (the throne) מַלְכוּת֛וֹ (of his kingdom) עַל־ (over) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) עַד־ (even to) עוֹלָֽם׃ (forever).

11  עַתָּ֣ה (Now), בְנִ֔י (my son), יְהִ֥י (may be) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) עִמָּ֑ךְ (with you), וְהִצְלַחְתָּ֗ (and may you prosper) וּבָנִ֙יתָ֙ (and build) בֵּ֚ית (the house) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ (your God), כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר (as) דִּבֶּ֥ר (He spoke) עָלֶֽיךָ׃ (concerning you). 12  אַ֣ךְ (Only) יִֽתֶּן־ (may give) לְּךָ֤ (to you) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) שֵׂ֣כֶל (wisdom) וּבִינָ֔ה (and understanding), וִֽיצַוְּךָ֖ (and give you charge) עַל־ (concerning) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel), וְלִשְׁמ֕וֹר (that you may keep) אֶת־ (-) תּוֹרַ֖ת (the law) יְהוָ֥ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃ (your God). 13  אָ֣ז (Then) תַּצְלִ֔יחַ (you will prosper), אִם־ (if) תִּשְׁמ֗וֹר (you take care) לַעֲשׂוֹת֙ (to fulfill) אֶת־ (-) הַֽחֻקִּ֣ים (the statutes) וְאֶת־ (and) הַמִּשְׁפָּטִ֔ים (the ordinances) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (with which) צִוָּ֧ה (commanded) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) מֹשֶׁ֖ה (Moses) עַל־ (concerning) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel). חֲזַ֣ק (Be strong) וֶאֱמָ֔ץ (and be courageous). אַל־ (Not) תִּירָ֖א (do fear) וְאַל־ (and do not) תֵּחָֽת׃ (be dismayed).

14  וְהִנֵּ֨ה (And behold), בְעָנְיִ֜י (in my affliction) הֲכִינ֣וֹתִי (I have prepared) לְבֵית־ (for the house) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH) זָהָ֞ב (gold) כִּכָּרִ֤ים (talents) מֵֽאָה־ (of a hundred) אֶ֙לֶף֙ (thousand), וְכֶ֗סֶף (and silver) אֶ֤לֶף (a thousand) אֲלָפִים֙ (thousands) כִּכָּרִ֔ים (of talents), וְלַנְּחֹ֤שֶׁת (and bronze) וְלַבַּרְזֶל֙ (and iron) אֵ֣ין (without) מִשְׁקָ֔ל (wieight); כִּ֥י (for) לָרֹ֖ב (so abundant) הָיָ֑ה (it is). וְעֵצִ֤ים (And timber) וַאֲבָנִים֙ (and stone) הֲכִינ֔וֹתִי (I have prepared), וַעֲלֵיהֶ֖ם (and to them) תּוֹסִֽיף׃ (you may add).

15  וְעִמְּךָ֤ (And with you) לָרֹב֙ (in abundance) עֹשֵׂ֣י (are those doing) מְלָאכָ֔ה (work): חֹצְבִ֕ים (Hewers), וְחָרָשֵׁ֥י (and craftsmen) אֶ֖בֶן (of stone) וָעֵ֑ץ (and of wood), וְכָל־ (and all of types) חָכָ֖ם (skillful men) בְּכָל־ (for every kind) מְלָאכָֽה׃ (of work) 16  לַזָּהָ֥ב (to the gold), לַכֶּ֛סֶף (to the silver), וְלַנְּחֹ֥שֶׁת (and to the bronze), וְלַבַּרְזֶ֖ל (and to the iron), אֵ֣ין (there is no) מִסְפָּ֑ר (number). ק֣וּם (Arise) וַעֲשֵׂ֔ה (and work), וִיהִ֥י (and be) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) עִמָּֽךְ׃ (with you).

17  וַיְצַ֤ו (And commanded) דָּוִיד֙ (David) לְכָל־ (all) שָׂרֵ֣י (the heads) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) לַעְזֹ֖ר (to help) לִשְׁלֹמֹ֥ה (Solomon) בְנֽוֹ׃ (his son): 18  הֲלֹ֨א (Is not) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶם֙ (your⁺ God) עִמָּכֶ֔ם (with you⁺)? וְהֵנִ֥יחַ (And has given rest) לָכֶ֖ם (to you⁺) מִסָּבִ֑יב (on every side)? כִּ֣י׀ (For) נָתַ֣ן (He has given) בְּיָדִ֗י (into my hand) אֵ֚ת (-) יֹשְׁבֵ֣י (the dwellers) הָאָ֔רֶץ (of the land), וְנִכְבְּשָׁ֥ה (and is subdued) הָאָ֛רֶץ (the land) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face of) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) וְלִפְנֵ֥י (and before) עַמּֽוֹ׃ (His people). 19  עַתָּ֗ה (Now) תְּנ֤וּ (set) לְבַבְכֶם֙ (your⁺ heart) וְנַפְשְׁכֶ֔ם (and your⁺ soul) לִדְר֖וֹשׁ (to seek) לַיהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֑ם (your⁺ God), וְק֗וּמוּ (and arise) וּבְנוּ֙ (and build) אֶת־ (-) מִקְדַּשׁ֙ (the sanctuary) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים (God), לְהָבִ֞יא (to bring) אֶת־ (-) אֲר֣וֹן (the ark) בְּרִית־ (of the covenant) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH) וּכְלֵי֙ (and the articles) קֹ֣דֶשׁ (holy) הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים (of God) לַבַּ֖יִת (into the house) הַנִּבְנֶ֥ה (that is to be built) לְשֵׁם־ (for the name) יְהוָֽה׃פ (of YHWH).
