Context
Mordecai Appeals to Esther
14For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows if perhaps you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” 15Then Esther sent this reply to Mordecai: 16“Go and assemble all the Jews who can be found in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day, and I and my maidens will fast as you do. After that, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish!”…

Then Esther
Esther, a Jewish queen of Persia, is central to the narrative of the Book of Esther. Her Hebrew name, Hadassah, means "myrtle," symbolizing peace and joy. Esther's position as queen is pivotal, as it places her in a unique position to influence the king and save her people. Her story is a testament to divine providence and the courage required to fulfill one's God-given purpose.

sent this reply
Communication in ancient Persia often involved messengers, as seen in Esther's interaction with Mordecai. This method underscores the urgency and importance of the message. Esther's response is a turning point in the narrative, indicating her willingness to take action despite the risks involved. It highlights the theme of obedience and courage in the face of danger.

to Mordecai
Mordecai, Esther's cousin and guardian, plays a crucial role in the story. His position at the king's gate suggests he held a significant role within the Persian administration. Mordecai's faith and wisdom are evident throughout the narrative, as he guides Esther and encourages her to act for the salvation of the Jewish people. His relationship with Esther is a model of mentorship and godly counsel.

Teaching Points
Courage in Crisis
Esther's willingness to risk her life for her people teaches us the importance of courage and faith when facing difficult situations. We are called to trust God and act boldly when He places us in positions to make a difference.

The Power of Influence
Esther's position as queen gave her unique access to the king. This reminds us that God places us in specific roles and relationships for His purposes, and we should use our influence for His glory.

The Role of Community
Mordecai's support and the collective fasting and prayer of the Jewish community highlight the importance of seeking support and intercession from fellow believers in times of need.

Divine Providence
The account of Esther illustrates God's providence and His ability to use individuals to fulfill His plans. We should remain open to how God might use us in His divine account.

Faith and Action
Esther's account shows the balance between faith and action. While she trusted God, she also took practical steps to address the crisis, teaching us to combine prayer with purposeful action.Verse 15. - Fast ye for me. Fasting for another is fasting to obtain God's blessing on that other, and is naturally accompanied with earnest prayer to God for the person who is the object of the fast. Thus here again the thought of God underlies the narrative. It has been supposed that Esther could not have meant an absolute fast - complete abstinence from both food and drink - for so long a period as three days; but Oriental abstemiousness would not be very severely taxed by a fast of this length. The time intended - from the evening of the first to the morning of the third day - need not have much exceeded thirty-six hours. I also and my maidens will fast likewise. "Likewise" is to be taken here in its proper sense, as meaning "in like manner." We also will abstain both from meat and drink during the same Period.
