1Therefore, having left the word of the beginning of Christ, we should carry on (upon) to maturity; not laying down again a foundation of repentance away from dead works and faith upon God,
2Of teaching about baptisms (baptismon- can be translated washings, submergings, possibly ritual washings of NT times, word is used of washing cups), and of laying upon of hands, and of the resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment;
3And this will we do, if God permits.
4For it is impossible (unable, powerless, incapable) for those having been once (once for all) enlightened, and having tasted of the heavenly gift, and having become partakers of the Holy Spirit;
5And having tasted God’s good saying (rhema, latin-verbum), and the power of the age about to happen,
6And having fallen away from close beside (defected, fallen from close beside), to restore (renew, bring back, make new again/back) them unto repentance, crucifying again in themselves the Son of God, and making a show/example of Him.
7For the earth having drunk in the rain coming upon it often and producing vegetation (greek-botanen like botany, latin-herbam-herb root is plant) useful (well-placed, suitable) for those through whom it is also tilled (worked the soil, cultivated), partakes of blessing from God;
8However that bringing out thorns (prickly plants) and thistles is rejected (failing to pass the test, reprobate, unapproved, worthless) and near to a curse, of which the end is unto burning. 9However, beloved, we are convinced of better [things] concerning you and things belonging to (having, holding, possessing) salvation, though we speak like this. 10For God is not unjust to forget (unnoticed upon, overlook, neglect) your work and the love that you undeniably display (show forth, indicate, prove) unto His name, having ministered to the saints and still ministering. 11And we wish each of you to undeniably display the same speedy diligence towards the full assurance of the hope until the end; 12So that you might not be sluggish (dull, slow, slack); However imitators of those through faith and long-temperance are inheriting the promises. 13For God having made His promise to Abraham, since He had no one greater to swear according to, swore according to Himself, 14Saying, “Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you;” 15And thus having long-endured (waited patiently, long-temperanced), he obtained the promise. 16For men swear according to the greater and the oath is the confirmation of the end (limit, boundary, conclusion) of all their disputes. 17In the same way, God wanting (plan with full resolve) more abundantly to show to the heirs of the promise, the unchangeableness (not to change position) of His resolved plan (purpose), He mediated (interposed) it by an oath, 18So that through two unchangeable matters in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong entreaty, who having fled for refuge to take hold of the hope being set before us, 19Which we have as an anchor of the soul, secure (secure because on solid footing) and firm (solid-footed, dependable because of solid footing, solid enough to walk on); and entering into that within the veil, 20Where Jesus entered as a forerunner for us, according to the order of Melchizadek, having become a high priest unto the age. |
