Now Hiram king of Tyre sent envoys to David, along with cedar logs, stonemasons, and carpenters, to build a palace for him. | 1Now Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David with cedar trees, masons and carpenters, to build a house for him. |
And David realized that the LORD had established him as king over Israel and had highly exalted his kingdom for the sake of His people Israel. | 2And David realized that the LORD had established him as king over Israel, and that his kingdom was highly exalted, for the sake of His people Israel. |
And David took more wives in Jerusalem and became the father of more sons and daughters. | 3Then David took more wives at Jerusalem, and David became the father of more sons and daughters. |

When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, they all went in search of him; but David learned of this and went out to face them. | 8When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up in search of David; and David heard of it and went out against them. |
Now the Philistines had come and raided the Valley of Rephaim. | 9Now the Philistines had come and made a raid in the valley of Rephaim. |
So David inquired of God, “Should I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hand?” “Go,” replied the LORD, “for I will deliver them into your hand.” | 10David inquired of God, saying, "Shall I go up against the Philistines? And will You give them into my hand?" Then the LORD said to him, "Go up, for I will give them into your hand." |
So David and his men went up to Baal-perazim, where he defeated the Philistines and said, “Like a bursting flood, God has burst out against my enemies by my hand.” So they called that place Baal-perazim. | 11So they came up to Baal-perazim, and David defeated them there; and David said, "God has broken through my enemies by my hand, like the breakthrough of waters." Therefore they named that place Baal-perazim. |
There the Philistines abandoned their gods, and David ordered that they be burned in the fire. | 12They abandoned their gods there; so David gave the order and they were burned with fire. |
Once again the Philistines raided the valley. | 13The Philistines made yet another raid in the valley. |
So David again inquired of God, who answered him, “Do not march up after them, but circle around them and attack them in front of the balsam trees. | 14David inquired again of God, and God said to him, "You shall not go up after them; circle around behind them and come at them in front of the balsam trees. |
As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, move out to battle, because this will mean that God has marched out before you to strike the camp of the Philistines.” | 15"It shall be when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then you shall go out to battle, for God will have gone out before you to strike the army of the Philistines." |
So David did as God had commanded him, and they struck down the army of the Philistines all the way from Gibeon to Gezer. | 16David did just as God had commanded him, and they struck down the army of the Philistines from Gibeon even as far as Gezer. |
And David’s fame went out into every land, and the LORD caused all nations to fear him. | 17Then the fame of David went out into all the lands; and the LORD brought the fear of him on all the nations. |
