And Adam had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. “With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man,” she said. | 1Now the man had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain, and she said, "I have gotten a manchild with the help of the LORD." |
Later she gave birth to Cain’s brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, while Cain was a tiller of the soil. | 2Again, she gave birth to his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of flocks, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. |
So in the course of time, Cain brought some of the fruit of the soil as an offering to the LORD, | 3So it came about in the course of time that Cain brought an offering to the LORD of the fruit of the ground. |
while Abel brought the best portions of the firstborn of his flock. And the LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, | 4Abel, on his part also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat portions. And the LORD had regard for Abel and for his offering; |
but He had no regard for Cain and his offering. So Cain became very angry, and his countenance fell. | 5but for Cain and for his offering He had no regard. So Cain became very angry and his countenance fell. |
“Why are you angry,” said the LORD to Cain, “and why has your countenance fallen? | 6Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? |
If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you refuse to do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires you, but you must master it.” | 7"If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it." |
Then Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let us go out to the field.” And while they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him. | 8Cain told Abel his brother. And it came about when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him. |
And the LORD said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I do not know!” he answered. “Am I my brother’s keeper?” | 9Then the LORD said to Cain, "Where is Abel your brother?" And he said, "I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?" |
“What have you done?” replied the LORD. “The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground. | 10He said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying to Me from the ground. |
Now you are cursed and banished from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. | 11"Now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. |
When you till the ground, it will no longer yield its produce to you. You will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.” | 12"When you cultivate the ground, it will no longer yield its strength to you; you will be a vagrant and a wanderer on the earth." |
But Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is greater than I can bear. | 13Cain said to the LORD, "My punishment is too great to bear! |
Behold, this day You have driven me from the face of the earth, and from Your face I will be hidden; I will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.” | 14"Behold, You have driven me this day from the face of the ground; and from Your face I will be hidden, and I will be a vagrant and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me." |
“Not so!” replied the LORD. “If anyone slays Cain, then Cain will be avenged sevenfold.” And the LORD placed a mark on Cain, so that no one who found him would kill him. | 15So the LORD said to him, "Therefore whoever kills Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold." And the LORD appointed a sign for Cain, so that no one finding him would slay him. |
So Cain went out from the presence of the LORD and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden. | 16Then Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden. |
And Cain had relations with his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. Then Cain built a city and named it after his son Enoch. | 17Cain had relations with his wife and she conceived, and gave birth to Enoch; and he built a city, and called the name of the city Enoch, after the name of his son. |
Now to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methusael, and Methusael was the father of Lamech. | 18Now to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad became the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael became the father of Methushael, and Methushael became the father of Lamech. |
And Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah. | 19Lamech took to himself two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other, Zillah. |
Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and raise livestock. | 20Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock. |
And his brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play the harp and flute. | 21His brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe. |
And Zillah gave birth to Tubal-cain, a forger of every implement of bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah. | 22As for Zillah, she also gave birth to Tubal-cain, the forger of all implements of bronze and iron; and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah. |
Then Lamech said to his wives: “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; wives of Lamech, listen to my speech. For I have slain a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me. | 23Lamech said to his wives, "Adah and Zillah, Listen to my voice, You wives of Lamech, Give heed to my speech, For I have killed a man for wounding me; And a boy for striking me; |
If Cain is avenged sevenfold, then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.” | 24If Cain is avenged sevenfold, Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold." |
And Adam again had relations with his wife, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, “God has granted me another seed in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.” | 25Adam had relations with his wife again; and she gave birth to a son, and named him Seth, for, she said, "God has appointed me another offspring in place of Abel, for Cain killed him." |
And to Seth also a son was born, and he called him Enosh. At that time men began to call upon the name of the LORD. | 26To Seth, to him also a son was born; and he called his name Enosh. Then men began to call upon the name of the LORD. |
