A few days later Jesus went back to Capernaum. And when the people heard that He was home,1When He had come back to Capernaum several days afterward, it was heard that He was at home.
they gathered in such large numbers that there was no more room, not even outside the door, as Jesus spoke the word to them.2And many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room, not even near the door; and He was speaking the word to them.
Then a paralytic was brought to Him, carried by four men.3And they came, bringing to Him a paralytic, carried by four men.
Since they were unable to get to Jesus through the crowd, they uncovered the roof above Him, made an opening, and lowered the paralytic on his mat.4Being unable to get to Him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above Him; and when they had dug an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic was lying.
When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”5And Jesus seeing their faith said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven."
But some of the scribes were sitting there and thinking in their hearts,6But some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts,
“Why does this man speak like this? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”7"Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming; who can forgive sins but God alone?"
At once Jesus knew in His spirit that they were thinking this way within themselves. “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts?” He asked.8Immediately Jesus, aware in His spirit that they were reasoning that way within themselves, said to them, "Why are you reasoning about these things in your hearts?
“Which is easier: to say to a paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, pick up your mat, and walk’?9"Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven'; or to say, 'Get up, and pick up your pallet and walk '?
But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins...” He said to the paralytic,10"But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins "-- He said to the paralytic,
“I tell you, get up, pick up your mat, and go home.”11"I say to you, get up, pick up your pallet and go home."
And immediately the man got up, picked up his mat, and walked out in front of them all. As a result, they were all astounded and glorified God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”12And he got up and immediately picked up the pallet and went out in the sight of everyone, so that they were all amazed and were glorifying God, saying, "We have never seen anything like this."
Once again Jesus went out beside the sea. All the people came to Him, and He taught them there.13And He went out again by the seashore; and all the people were coming to Him, and He was teaching them.
As He was walking along, He saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth. “Follow Me,” He told him, and Levi got up and followed Him.14As He passed by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting in the tax booth, and He said to him, "Follow Me!" And he got up and followed Him.
While Jesus was dining at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with Him and His disciples—for there were many who followed Him.15And it happened that He was reclining at the table in his house, and many tax collectors and sinners were dining with Jesus and His disciples; for there were many of them, and they were following Him.
When the scribes who were Pharisees saw Jesus eating with these people, they asked His disciples, “Why does He eat with tax collectors and sinners?”16When the scribes of the Pharisees saw that He was eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they said to His disciples, "Why is He eating and drinking with tax collectors and sinners?"
On hearing this, Jesus told them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”17And hearing this, Jesus said to them, "It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners."
Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were often fasting. So people came to Jesus and asked, “Why don’t Your disciples fast like John’s disciples and those of the Pharisees?”18John's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting; and they came and said to Him, "Why do John's disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?"
Jesus replied, “How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while He is with them? As long as He is with them, they cannot fast.19And Jesus said to them, "While the bridegroom is with them, the attendants of the bridegroom cannot fast, can they? So long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.
But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.20"But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day.
No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the new piece will pull away from the old, and a worse tear will result.21"No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; otherwise the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear results.
And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. Instead, new wine is poured into new wineskins.”22"No one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost and the skins as well; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins."
One Sabbath Jesus was passing through the grainfields, and His disciples began to pick the heads of grain as they walked along.23And it happened that He was passing through the grainfields on the Sabbath, and His disciples began to make their way along while picking the heads of grain.
So the Pharisees said to Him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”24The Pharisees were saying to Him, "Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?"
Jesus replied, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need?25And He said to them, "Have you never read what David did when he was in need and he and his companions became hungry;
During the high priesthood of Abiathar, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which was lawful only for the priests. And he gave some to his companions as well.”26how he entered the house of God in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the consecrated bread, which is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests, and he also gave it to those who were with him?"
Then Jesus declared, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.27Jesus said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.
Therefore, the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”28"So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath."
