Berean Study BibleNew Living Translation
Now the Spirit expressly states that in later times some will abandon the faith to follow deceitful spirits and the teachings of demons,1Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons.
influenced by the hypocrisy of liars, whose consciences are seared with a hot iron.2These people are hypocrites and liars, and their consciences are dead.
They will prohibit marriage and require abstinence from certain foods that God has created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.3They will say it is wrong to be married and wrong to eat certain foods. But God created those foods to be eaten with thanks by faithful people who know the truth.
For every creation of God is good, and nothing that is received with thanksgiving should be rejected,4Since everything God created is good, we should not reject any of it but receive it with thanks.
because it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.5For we know it is made acceptable by the word of God and prayer. A Good Servant of Christ Jesus
By pointing out these things to the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, nourished by the words of faith and sound instruction that you have followed.6If you explain these things to the brothers and sisters, Timothy, you will be a worthy servant of Christ Jesus, one who is nourished by the message of faith and the good teaching you have followed.
But reject irreverent, silly myths. Instead, train yourself for godliness.7Do not waste time arguing over godless ideas and old wives’ tales. Instead, train yourself to be godly.
For physical exercise is of limited value, but godliness is valuable in every way, holding promise for the present life and for the one to come.8“Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.”
This is a trustworthy saying, worthy of full acceptance.9This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it.
To this end we labor and strive, because we have set our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of everyone, and especially of those who believe.10This is why we work hard and continue to struggle, for our hope is in the living God, who is the Savior of all people and particularly of all believers.
Command and teach these things.11Teach these things and insist that everyone learn them.
Let no one despise your youth, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.12Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.
Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, and to teaching.13Until I get there, focus on reading the Scriptures to the church, encouraging the believers, and teaching them.
Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given you through the prophecy spoken over you at the laying on of the hands of the elders.14Do not neglect the spiritual gift you received through the prophecy spoken over you when the elders of the church laid their hands on you.
Be diligent in these matters and absorbed in them, so that your progress will be evident to all.15Give your complete attention to these matters. Throw yourself into your tasks so that everyone will see your progress.
Pay close attention to your life and to your teaching. Persevere in these things, for by so doing you will save both yourself and those who hear you.16Keep a close watch on how you live and on your teaching. Stay true to what is right for the sake of your own salvation and the salvation of those who hear you.
