| 1Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, | 1Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. |
| 2through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. | 2Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory. |
| 3Not only that, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; | 3We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. |
| 4perseverance, character; and character, hope. | 4And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. |
| 5And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out His love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us. | 5And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love. |
| 6For at just the right time, while we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. | 6When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. |
| 7Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. | 7Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. |
| 8But God proves His love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. | 8But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. |
| 9Therefore, since we have now been justified by His blood, how much more shall we be saved from wrath through Him! | 9And since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God’s condemnation. |
| 10For if, when we were enemies of God, we were reconciled to Him through the death of His Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through His life! | 10For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son. |
| 11Not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. | 11So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God. Adam and Christ Contrasted |
| 12Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, so also death was passed on to all men, because all sinned. | 12When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned. |
| 13For sin was in the world before the law was given; but sin is not taken into account when there is no law. | 13Yes, people sinned even before the law was given. But it was not counted as sin because there was not yet any law to break. |
| 14Nevertheless, death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who did not sin in the way that Adam transgressed. He is a pattern of the One to come. | 14Still, everyone died—from the time of Adam to the time of Moses—even those who did not disobey an explicit commandment of God, as Adam did. Now Adam is a symbol, a representation of Christ, who was yet to come. |
| 15But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many! | 15But there is a great difference between Adam’s sin and God’s gracious gift. For the sin of this one man, Adam, brought death to many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of forgiveness to many through this other man, Jesus Christ. |
| 16Again, the gift is not like the result of the one man’s sin: The judgment that followed one sin brought condemnation, but the gift that followed many trespasses brought justification. | 16And the result of God’s gracious gift is very different from the result of that one man’s sin. For Adam’s sin led to condemnation, but God’s free gift leads to our being made right with God, even though we are guilty of many sins. |
| 17For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive an abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ! | 17For the sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to rule over many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of righteousness, for all who receive it will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ. |
| 18So then, just as one trespass brought condemnation for all men, so also one act of righteousness brought justification and life for all men. | 18Yes, Adam’s one sin brings condemnation for everyone, but Christ’s one act of righteousness brings a right relationship with God and new life for everyone. |
| 19For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous. | 19Because one person disobeyed God, many became sinners. But because one other person obeyed God, many will be made righteous. |
| 20The law came in so that the trespass would increase; but where sin increased, grace increased all the more, | 20God’s law was given so that all people could see how sinful they were. But as people sinned more and more, God’s wonderful grace became more abundant. |
| 21so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. | 21So just as sin ruled over all people and brought them to death, now God’s wonderful grace rules instead, giving us right standing with God and resulting in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. |
