For every high priest taken from among men is appointed in matters pertaining to God for the people, to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. | 1Every high priest is appointed from among men to represent them in matters relating to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. |
He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he is also clothed with weakness. | 2He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and misguided, since he himself is beset by weakness. |
Because of this, he must make an offering for his own sins as well as for the people. | 3That is why he is obligated to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people. |
No one takes this honor on himself; instead, a person is called by God, just as Aaron was. | 4No one takes this honor upon himself; he must be called by God, just as Aaron was. |
In the same way, Christ did not exalt himself to become a high priest, but God who said to him, You are my Son; today I have become your Father, | 5So also Christ did not take upon Himself the glory of becoming a high priest, but He was called by the One who said to Him: “You are My Son; today I have become Your Father.” |
also says in another place, You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. | 6And in another passage God says: “You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.” |
During his earthly life, he offered prayers and appeals with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. | 7During the days of Jesus’ earthly life, He offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the One who could save Him from death, and He was heard because of His reverence. |
Although he was the Son, he learned obedience from what he suffered. | 8Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from what He suffered. |
After he was perfected, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, | 9And having been made perfect, He became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey Him |
and he was declared by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. | 10and was designated by God as high priest in the order of Melchizedek. |
We have a great deal to say about this, and it is difficult to explain, since you have become too lazy to understand. | 11We have much to say about this, but it is hard to explain, because you are dull of hearing. |
Although by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the basic principles of God's revelation again. You need milk, not solid food. | 12Although by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to reteach you the basic principles of God’s word. You need milk, not solid food! |
Now everyone who lives on milk is inexperienced with the message about righteousness, because he is an infant. | 13For everyone who lives on milk is still an infant, inexperienced in the message of righteousness. |
But solid food is for the mature--for those whose senses have been trained to distinguish between good and evil. | 14But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained their senses to distinguish good from evil. |
