A good name is to be chosen over great wealth; favor is better than silver and gold.1A good name is more desirable than great riches; favor is better than silver and gold.
Rich and poor have this in common: the LORD makes them all.2The rich and the poor have this in common: The LORD is Maker of them all.
A sensible person sees danger and takes cover, but the inexperienced keep going and are punished.3The prudent see danger and take cover, but the simple keep going and suffer the consequences.
Humility, the fear of the LORD, results in wealth, honor, and life.4The rewards of humility and the fear of the LORD are wealth and honor and life.
There are thorns and snares on the way of the crooked; the one who guards himself stays far from them.5Thorns and snares lie on the path of the perverse; he who guards his soul stays far from them.
Start a youth out on his way; even when he grows old he will not depart from it.6Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.
The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is a slave to the lender.7The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender.
The one who sows injustice will reap disaster, and the rod of his fury will be destroyed.8He who sows injustice will reap disaster, and the rod of his fury will be destroyed.
A generous person will be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor.9A generous man will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor.
Drive out a mocker, and conflict goes too; then quarreling and dishonor will cease.10Drive out the mocker, and conflict will depart; even quarreling and insults will cease.
The one who loves a pure heart and gracious lips--the king is his friend.11He who loves a pure heart and gracious lips will have the king for a friend.
The LORD's eyes keep watch over knowledge, but he overthrows the words of the treacherous.12The LORD’s eyes keep watch over knowledge, but He frustrates the words of the faithless.
The slacker says, "There's a lion outside! I'll be killed in the public square!"13The slacker says, “There is a lion outside! I will be slain in the streets!”
The mouth of the forbidden woman is a deep pit; a man cursed by the LORD will fall into it.14The mouth of an adulteress is a deep pit; he who is under the wrath of the LORD will fall into it.
Foolishness is bound to the heart of a youth; a rod of discipline will separate it from him.15Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline drives it far from him.
Oppressing the poor to enrich oneself, and giving to the rich--both lead only to poverty.16Oppressing the poor to enrich oneself or giving gifts to the rich will surely lead to poverty.
Listen closely, pay attention to the words of the wise, and apply your mind to my knowledge.17Incline your ear and hear the words of the wise—apply your mind to my knowledge—
For it is pleasing if you keep them within you and if they are constantly on your lips.18for it is pleasing when you keep them within you and they are constantly on your lips.
I have instructed you today--even you--so that your confidence may be in the LORD.19So that your trust may be in the LORD, I instruct you today—yes, you.
Haven't I written for you thirty sayings about counsel and knowledge,20Have I not written for you thirty sayings about counsel and knowledge,
in order to teach you true and reliable words, so that you may give a dependable report to those who sent you?21to show you true and reliable words, that you may soundly answer those who sent you?
Don't rob a poor person because he is poor, and don't crush the oppressed at the city gate,22Do not rob a poor man because he is poor, and do not crush the afflicted at the gate,
for the LORD will champion their cause and will plunder those who plunder them.23for the LORD will take up their case and will plunder those who rob them.
Don't make friends with an angry person, and don't be a companion of a hot-tempered one,24Do not make friends with an angry man, and do not associate with a hot-tempered man,
or you will learn his ways and entangle yourself in a snare.25or you may learn his ways and entangle yourself in a snare.
Don't be one of those who enter agreements, who put up security for loans.26Do not be one who gives pledges, who puts up security for debts.
If you have nothing with which to pay, even your bed will be taken from under you.27If you have nothing with which to pay, why should your bed be taken from under you?
Don't move an ancient boundary marker that your fathers set up.28Do not move an ancient boundary stone which your fathers have placed.
Do you see a person skilled in his work? He will stand in the presence of kings. He will not stand in the presence of the unknown.29Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will be stationed in the presence of kings; he will not stand before obscure men.
