LORD, remember what has happened to us. Look, and see our disgrace! | 1LORD, remember what has happened to us. Pay attention, and look at our shame! |
Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, our houses to foreigners. | 2Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, and our homes to foreigners. |
We have become orphans, fatherless; our mothers are widows. | 3We are now orphans—without fathers— and our mothers are like widows. |
We must pay for the water we drink; our wood comes at a price. | 4We pay to drink our own water, and our own wood is sold to us at high price. |
We are closely pursued; we are tired, and no one offers us rest. | 5Our pursuers breathe down our necks; we are weary, but there is no rest for us. |
We made a treaty with Egypt and with Assyria, to get enough food. | 6We made a deal with the Egyptians and the Assyrians for the price of food. |
Our fathers sinned; they no longer exist, but we bear their punishment. | 7Our ancestors sinned and no longer exist yet we continue to bear the consequences of their sin. |
Slaves rule over us; no one rescues us from them. | 8Slaves rule over us, and no one delivers us from their control. |
We secure our food at the risk of our lives because of the sword in the wilderness. | 9We risk our lives to obtain our food, facing death in the desert. |
Our skin is as hot as an oven from the ravages of hunger. | 10Our skin blisters as from an oven, due to ravaging blasts of the famine. |
Women have been raped in Zion, virgins in the cities of Judah. | 11They have raped women in Zion, young women in the towns of Judah. |
Princes have been hung up by their hands; elders are shown no respect. | 12Princes they have hung by their hands; elders they have disrespected. |
Young men labor at millstones; boys stumble under loads of wood. | 13Our young men must grind grain with a millstone; our youths stumble under the weight of wood. |
The elders have left the city gate, the young men, their music. | 14Our elders have ceased ruling at the gate; our young men have abandoned their music. |
Joy has left our hearts; our dancing has turned to mourning. | 15The joy of our hearts has ceased, and our dancing has turned into dirges. |
The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned. | 16The crown has fallen from our head— woe to us, because we have sinned! |
Because of this, our heart is sick; because of these, our eyes grow dim: | 17This is why our hearts faint, and why our eyes grow dim: |
because of Mount Zion, which lies desolate and has jackals prowling in it. | 18Because Mount Zion is desolate; foxes roam around it. |
You, LORD, are enthroned forever; your throne endures from generation to generation. | 19You, LORD, are forever— your throne endures from generation to generation. |
Why do you continually forget us, abandon us for our entire lives? | 20So why have you completely forgotten us, forsaking us for so long? |
LORD, bring us back to yourself, so we may return; renew our days as in former times, | 21Restore us to yourself, LORD, so that we may return. Renew our days as before, |
unless you have completely rejected us and are intensely angry with us. | 22unless you have utterly rejected us and are angry with us without limit. |
