Imitate me, as I also imitate Christ. | 1Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ. |
Now I praise you because you remember me in everything and hold fast to the traditions just as I delivered them to you. | 2Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you. |
But I want you to know that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of the woman, and God is the head of Christ. | 3But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. |
Every man who prays or prophesies with something on his head dishonors his head. | 4Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head. |
Every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, since that is one and the same as having her head shaved. | 5But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven. |
For if a woman doesn't cover her head, she should have her hair cut off. But if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, let her head be covered. | 6For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered. |
A man should not cover his head, because he is the image and glory of God. So too, woman is the glory of man. | 7For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man. |
For man did not come from woman, but woman came from man. | 8For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. |
Neither was man created for the sake of woman, but woman for the sake of man. | 9Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man. |
This is why a woman should have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. | 10For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels. |
In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, and man is not independent of woman. | 11Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord. |
For just as woman came from man, so man comes through woman, and all things come from God. | 12For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God. |
Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? | 13Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered? |
Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair it is a disgrace to him, | 14Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? |
but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her as a covering. | 15But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering. |
If anyone wants to argue about this, we have no other custom, nor do the churches of God. | 16But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God. |
Now in giving this instruction I do not praise you, since you come together not for the better but for the worse. | 17Now in this that I declare unto you I praise you not, that ye come together not for the better, but for the worse. |
For to begin with, I hear that when you come together as a church there are divisions among you, and in part I believe it. | 18For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it. |
Indeed, it is necessary that there be factions among you, so that those who are approved may be recognized among you. | 19For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you. |
When you come together, then, it is not to eat the Lord's Supper. | 20When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord's supper. |
For at the meal, each one eats his own supper. So one person is hungry while another gets drunk! | 21For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken. |
Don't you have homes in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What should I say to you? Should I praise you? I do not praise you in this matter! | 22What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not. |
For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took bread, | 23For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: |
and when he had given thanks, broke it, and said, "This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." | 24And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. |
In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, and said, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." | 25After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. |
For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. | 26For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come. |
So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sin against the body and blood of the Lord. | 27Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. |
Let a person examine himself; in this way let him eat the bread and drink from the cup. | 28But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. |
For whoever eats and drinks without recognizing the body, eats and drinks judgment on himself. | 29For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. |
This is why many are sick and ill among you, and many have fallen asleep. | 30For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. |
If we were properly judging ourselves, we would not be judged, | 31For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. |
but when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined, so that we may not be condemned with the world. | 32But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world. |
Therefore, my brothers and sisters, when you come together to eat, welcome one another. | 33Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another. |
If anyone is hungry, he should eat at home, so that when you gather together you will not come under judgment. I will give instructions about the other matters whenever I come. | 34And if any man hunger, let him eat at home; that ye come not together unto condemnation. And the rest will I set in order when I come. |
