The word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai: | 1The word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai saying, |
"Get up! Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it because their evil has come up before me." | 2"Arise, go to Nineveh the great city and cry against it, for their wickedness has come up before Me." |
Jonah got up to flee to Tarshish from the LORD's presence. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. He paid the fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish from the LORD's presence. | 3But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. So he went down to Joppa, found a ship which was going to Tarshish, paid the fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. |
But the LORD threw a great wind onto the sea, and such a great storm arose on the sea that the ship threatened to break apart. | 4The LORD hurled a great wind on the sea and there was a great storm on the sea so that the ship was about to break up. |
The sailors were afraid, and each cried out to his god. They threw the ship's cargo into the sea to lighten the load. Meanwhile, Jonah had gone down to the lowest part of the vessel and had stretched out and fallen into a deep sleep. | 5Then the sailors became afraid and every man cried to his god, and they threw the cargo which was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone below into the hold of the ship, lain down and fallen sound asleep. |
The captain approached him and said, "What are you doing sound asleep? Get up! Call to your god. Maybe this god will consider us, and we won't perish." | 6So the captain approached him and said, "How is it that you are sleeping? Get up, call on your god. Perhaps your god will be concerned about us so that we will not perish." |
"Come on!" the sailors said to each other. "Let's cast lots. Then we'll know who is to blame for this trouble we're in." So they cast lots, and the lot singled out Jonah. | 7Each man said to his mate, "Come, let us cast lots so we may learn on whose account this calamity has struck us." So they cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah. |
Then they said to him, "Tell us who is to blame for this trouble we're in. What is your business, and where are you from? What is your country, and what people are you from?" | 8Then they said to him, "Tell us, now! On whose account has this calamity struck us? What is your occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?" |
He answered them, "I'm a Hebrew. I worship the LORD, the God of the heavens, who made the sea and the dry land." | 9He said to them, "I am a Hebrew, and I fear the LORD God of heaven who made the sea and the dry land." |
Then the men were seized by a great fear and said to him, "What is this you've done?" The men knew he was fleeing from the LORD's presence because he had told them. | 10Then the men became extremely frightened and they said to him, "How could you do this?" For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them. |
So they said to him, "What should we do to you so that the sea will calm down for us?" For the sea was getting worse and worse. | 11So they said to him, "What should we do to you that the sea may become calm for us?"-- for the sea was becoming increasingly stormy. |
He answered them, "Pick me up and throw me into the sea so that it will calm down for you, for I know that I'm to blame for this great storm that is against you." | 12He said to them, "Pick me up and throw me into the sea. Then the sea will become calm for you, for I know that on account of me this great storm has come upon you." |
Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to get back to dry land, but they couldn't because the sea was raging against them more and more. | 13However, the men rowed desperately to return to land but they could not, for the sea was becoming even stormier against them. |
So they called out to the LORD: "Please, LORD, don't let us perish because of this man's life, and don't charge us with innocent blood! For you, LORD, have done just as you pleased." | 14Then they called on the LORD and said, "We earnestly pray, O LORD, do not let us perish on account of this man's life and do not put innocent blood on us; for You, O LORD, have done as You have pleased." |
Then they picked up Jonah and threw him into the sea, and the sea stopped its raging. | 15So they picked up Jonah, threw him into the sea, and the sea stopped its raging. |
The men were seized by great fear of the LORD, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows. | 16Then the men feared the LORD greatly, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows. |
The LORD appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. | 17And the LORD appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the stomach of the fish three days and three nights. |
