"When the LORD your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess, and he drives out many nations before you--the Hethites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites, seven nations more numerous and powerful than you-- | 1When the LORD your God brings you to the land that you are going to occupy and forces out many nations before you--Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, seven nations more numerous and powerful than you-- |
and when the LORD your God delivers them over to you and you defeat them, you must completely destroy them. Make no treaty with them and show them no mercy. | 2and he delivers them over to you and you attack them, you must utterly annihilate them. Make no treaty with them and show them no mercy! |
You must not intermarry with them, and you must not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons, | 3You must not intermarry with them. Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons, |
because they will turn your sons away from me to worship other gods. Then the LORD's anger will burn against you, and he will swiftly destroy you. | 4for they will turn your sons away from me to worship other gods. Then the anger of the LORD will erupt against you and he will quickly destroy you. |
Instead, this is what you are to do to them: tear down their altars, smash their sacred pillars, cut down their Asherah poles, and burn their carved images. | 5Instead, this is what you must do to them: You must tear down their altars, shatter their sacred pillars, cut down their sacred Asherah poles, and burn up their idols. |
For you are a holy people belonging to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you to be his own possession out of all the peoples on the face of the earth. | 6For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. He has chosen you to be his people, prized above all others on the face of the earth. |
"The LORD had his heart set on you and chose you, not because you were more numerous than all peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. | 7It is not because you were more numerous than all the other peoples that the LORD favored and chose you--for in fact you were the least numerous of all peoples. |
But because the LORD loved you and kept the oath he swore to your fathers, he brought you out with a strong hand and redeemed you from the place of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. | 8Rather it is because of his love for you and his faithfulness to the promise he solemnly vowed to your ancestors that the LORD brought you out with great power, redeeming you from the place of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. |
Know that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps his gracious covenant loyalty for a thousand generations with those who love him and keep his commands. | 9So realize that the LORD your God is the true God, the faithful God who keeps covenant faithfully with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations, |
But he directly pays back and destroys those who hate him. He will not hesitate to pay back directly the one who hates him. | 10but who pays back those who hate him as they deserve and destroys them. He will not ignore those who hate him but will repay them as they deserve! |
So keep the command--the statutes and ordinances--that I am giving you to follow today. | 11So keep the commandments, statutes, and ordinances that I today am commanding you to do. |
"If you listen to and are careful to keep these ordinances, the LORD your God will keep his covenant loyalty with you, as he swore to your fathers. | 12If you obey these ordinances and are careful to do them, the LORD your God will faithfully keep covenant with you as he promised your ancestors. |
He will love you, bless you, and multiply you. He will bless your offspring, and the produce of your land--your grain, new wine, and fresh oil--the young of your herds, and the newborn of your flocks, in the land he swore to your fathers that he would give you. | 13He will love and bless you, and make you numerous. He will bless you with many children, with the produce of your soil, your grain, your new wine, your oil, the offspring of your oxen, and the young of your flocks in the land which he promised your ancestors to give you. |
You will be blessed above all peoples; there will be no infertile male or female among you or your livestock. | 14You will be blessed beyond all peoples; there will be no barrenness among you or your livestock. |
The LORD will remove all sickness from you; he will not put on you all the terrible diseases of Egypt that you know about, but he will inflict them on all who hate you. | 15The LORD will protect you from all sickness, and you will not experience any of the terrible diseases that you knew in Egypt; instead he will inflict them on all those who hate you. |
You must destroy all the peoples the LORD your God is delivering over to you and not look on them with pity. Do not worship their gods, for that will be a snare to you. | 16You must destroy all the people whom the LORD your God is about to deliver over to you; you must not pity them or worship their gods, for that will be a snare to you. |
"If you say to yourself, 'These nations are greater than I; how can I drive them out?' | 17If you think, "These nations are more numerous than I--how can I dispossess them?" |
do not be afraid of them. Be sure to remember what the LORD your God did to Pharaoh and all Egypt: | 18you must not fear them. You must carefully recall what the LORD your God did to Pharaoh and all Egypt, |
the great trials that you saw, the signs and wonders, the strong hand and outstretched arm, by which the LORD your God brought you out. The LORD your God will do the same to all the peoples you fear. | 19the great judgments you saw, the signs and wonders, the strength and power by which he brought you out--thus the LORD your God will do to all the people you fear. |
The LORD your God will also send hornets against them until all the survivors and those hiding from you perish. | 20Furthermore, the LORD your God will release hornets among them until the very last ones who hide from you perish. |
Don't be terrified of them, for the LORD your God, a great and awesome God, is among you. | 21You must not tremble in their presence, for the LORD your God, who is present among you, is a great and awesome God. |
The LORD your God will drive out these nations before you little by little. You will not be able to destroy them all at once; otherwise, the wild animals will become too numerous for you. | 22He, the God who leads you, will expel the nations little by little. You will not be allowed to destroy them all at once lest the wild animals overrun you. |
The LORD your God will give them over to you and throw them into great confusion until they are destroyed. | 23The LORD your God will give them over to you; he will throw them into a great panic until they are destroyed. |
He will hand their kings over to you, and you will wipe out their names under heaven. No one will be able to stand against you; you will annihilate them. | 24He will hand over their kings to you and you will erase their very names from memory. Nobody will be able to resist you until you destroy them. |
Burn up the carved images of their gods. Don't covet the silver and gold on the images and take it for yourself, or else you will be ensnared by it, for it is detestable to the LORD your God. | 25You must burn the images of their gods, but do not covet the silver and gold that covers them so much that you take it for yourself and thus become ensnared by it; for it is abhorrent to the LORD your God. |
Do not bring any detestable thing into your house, or you will be set apart for destruction like it. You are to abhor and detest it utterly because it is set apart for destruction. | 26You must not bring any abhorrent thing into your house and thereby become an object of divine wrath along with it. You must absolutely detest and abhor it, for it is an object of divine wrath. |
