Now the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will depart from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and the teachings of demons,1Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons.
through the hypocrisy of liars whose consciences are seared.2These people are hypocrites and liars, and their consciences are dead.
They forbid marriage and demand abstinence from foods that God created to be received with gratitude by those who believe and know the truth.3They will say it is wrong to be married and wrong to eat certain foods. But God created those foods to be eaten with thanks by faithful people who know the truth.
For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving,4Since everything God created is good, we should not reject any of it but receive it with thanks.
since it is sanctified by the word of God and by prayer.5For we know it is made acceptable by the word of God and prayer. A Good Servant of Christ Jesus
If you point these things out to the brothers and sisters, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, nourished by the words of the faith and the good teaching that you have followed.6If you explain these things to the brothers and sisters, Timothy, you will be a worthy servant of Christ Jesus, one who is nourished by the message of faith and the good teaching you have followed.
But have nothing to do with pointless and silly myths. Rather, train yourself in godliness.7Do not waste time arguing over godless ideas and old wives’ tales. Instead, train yourself to be godly.
For the training of the body has limited benefit, but godliness is beneficial in every way, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.8“Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.”
This saying is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance.9This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it.
For this reason we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.10This is why we work hard and continue to struggle, for our hope is in the living God, who is the Savior of all people and particularly of all believers.
Command and teach these things.11Teach these things and insist that everyone learn them.
Don't let anyone despise your youth, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity.12Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.
Until I come, give your attention to public reading, exhortation, and teaching.13Until I get there, focus on reading the Scriptures to the church, encouraging the believers, and teaching them.
Don't neglect the gift that is in you; it was given to you through prophecy, with the laying on of hands by the council of elders.14Do not neglect the spiritual gift you received through the prophecy spoken over you when the elders of the church laid their hands on you.
Practice these things; be committed to them, so that your progress may be evident to all.15Give your complete attention to these matters. Throw yourself into your tasks so that everyone will see your progress.
Pay close attention to your life and your teaching; persevere in these things, for in doing this you will save both yourself and your hearers.16Keep a close watch on how you live and on your teaching. Stay true to what is right for the sake of your own salvation and the salvation of those who hear you.
