English Standard Version | Berean Study Bible |
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. | 1Therefore I urge you, brothers, on account of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. |
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. | 2Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God. |
For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. | 3For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but think of yourself with sober judgment, according to the measure of faith God has given you. |
For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, | 4Just as each of us has one body with many members, and not all members have the same function, |
so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. | 5so in Christ we who are many are one body, and each member belongs to one another. |
Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; | 6We have different gifts according to the grace given us. If one’s gift is prophecy, let him use it in proportion to his faith; |
if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; | 7if it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; |
the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. | 8if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is giving, let him give generously; if it is leading, let him lead with diligence; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully. |
Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. | 9Love must be sincere. Detest what is evil; cling to what is good. |
Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. | 10Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Outdo yourselves in honoring one another. |
Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. | 11Do not let your zeal subside; keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. |
Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. | 12Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, persistent in prayer. |
Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. | 13Share with the saints who are in need. Practice hospitality. |
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. | 14Bless those who persecute you. Bless and do not curse. |
Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. | 15Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep. |
Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. | 16Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but enjoy the company of the lowly. Do not be conceited. |
Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. | 17Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Carefully consider what is right in the eyes of everybody. |
If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. | 18If it is possible on your part, live at peace with everyone. |
Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” | 19Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but leave room for God’s wrath. For it is written: “Vengeance is Mine; I will repay, says the Lord.” |
To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” | 20On the contrary, “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink. For in so doing, you will heap burning coals on his head.” |
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. | 21Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. |
