Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession,1Therefore, holy brothers, partners in a heavenly calling, keep your focus on Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession.
who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house.2He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was in all God's household,
For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself.3because he is worthy of greater glory than Moses in the same way that the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself.
(For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.)4After all, every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything.
Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later,5Moses was faithful in all God's household as a servant who was to testify to what would be said later,
but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.6but the Messiah was faithful as the Son in charge of God's household, and we are his household if we hold on to our courage and the hope in which we rejoice.
Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, “Today, if you hear his voice,7Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, "Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness,8do not harden your hearts as they did when they provoked me during the time of testing in the wilderness.
where your fathers put me to the test and saw my works for forty years.9There your ancestors tested me, even though they had seen my actions
Therefore I was provoked with that generation, and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart; they have not known my ways.’10for 40 years. That is why I was indignant with that generation and said, 'They are always going astray in their hearts, and they have not known my ways.'
As I swore in my wrath, ‘They shall not enter my rest.’”11So in my anger I swore a solemn oath that they would never enter my rest."
Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God.12See to it, my brothers, that no evil, unbelieving heart is found in any of you, as shown by your turning away from the living God.
But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.13Instead, continue to encourage one another every day, as long as it is called "Today," so that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin,
For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.14because we are the Messiah's partners only if we hold on to our original confidence to the end.
As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”15As it is said, "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as they did when they provoked me."
For who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not all those who left Egypt led by Moses?16Now who heard him and provoked him? Was it not all those who came out of Egypt led by Moses?
And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?17And with whom was he angry for 40 years? Was it not with those who sinned and whose bodies fell dead in the wilderness?
And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient?18And to whom did he swear that they would never enter his rest? It was to those who disobeyed him, was it not?
So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.19So we see that they were unable to enter because of their unbelief.
