English Standard Version | King James Bible |
Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, | 1Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; |
through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared, | 2Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; |
who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. | 3Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. |
For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, | 4For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: |
for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer. | 5For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer. |
If you put these things before the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed. | 6If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained. |
Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; | 7But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness. |
for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. | 8For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. |
The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance. | 9This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation. |
For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe. | 10For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe. |
Command and teach these things. | 11These things command and teach. |
Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. | 12Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. |
Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching. | 13Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. |
Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophecy when the council of elders laid their hands on you. | 14Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. |
Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress. | 15Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. |
Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers. | 16Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee. |
