English Standard Version | King James Bible |
I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: | 1I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; |
preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. | 2Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. |
For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, | 3For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; |
and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. | 4And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. |
As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. | 5But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry. |
For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. | 6For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. |
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. | 7I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: |
Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing. | 8Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. |
Do your best to come to me soon. | 9Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me: |
For Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia. | 10For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia. |
Luke alone is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is very useful to me for ministry. | 11Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with thee: for he is profitable to me for the ministry. |
Tychicus I have sent to Ephesus. | 12And Tychicus have I sent to Ephesus. |
When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, also the books, and above all the parchments. | 13The cloke that I left at Troas with Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but especially the parchments. |
Alexander the coppersmith did me great harm; the Lord will repay him according to his deeds. | 14Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord reward him according to his works: |
Beware of him yourself, for he strongly opposed our message. | 15Of whom be thou ware also; for he hath greatly withstood our words. |
At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. May it not be charged against them! | 16At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men forsook me: I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge. |
But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth. | 17Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion. |
The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen. | 18And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. |
Greet Prisca and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus. | 19Salute Prisca and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus. |
Erastus remained at Corinth, and I left Trophimus, who was ill, at Miletus. | 20Erastus abode at Corinth: but Trophimus have I left at Miletum sick. |
Do your best to come before winter. Eubulus sends greetings to you, as do Pudens and Linus and Claudia and all the brothers. | 21Do thy diligence to come before winter. Eubulus greeteth thee, and Pudens, and Linus, and Claudia, and all the brethren. |
The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you. | 22The Lord Jesus Christ be with thy spirit. Grace be with you. Amen. |
