An oracle concerning Moab. Because Ar of Moab is laid waste in a night, Moab is undone; because Kir of Moab is laid waste in a night, Moab is undone. | 1Here is a message about Moab: Indeed, in a night it is devastated, Ar of Moab is destroyed! Indeed, in a night it is devastated, Kir of Moab is destroyed! |
He has gone up to the temple, and to Dibon, to the high places to weep; over Nebo and over Medeba Moab wails. On every head is baldness; every beard is shorn; | 2They went up to the temple, the people of Dibon went up to the high places to lament. Because of what happened to Nebo and Medeba, Moab wails. Every head is shaved bare, every beard is trimmed off. |
in the streets they wear sackcloth; on the housetops and in the squares everyone wails and melts in tears. | 3In their streets they wear sackcloth; on their roofs and in their town squares all of them wail, they fall down weeping. |
Heshbon and Elealeh cry out; their voice is heard as far as Jahaz; therefore the armed men of Moab cry aloud; his soul trembles. | 4The people of Heshbon and Elealeh cry out, their voices are heard as far away as Jahaz. For this reason Moab's soldiers shout in distress; their courage wavers. |
My heart cries out for Moab; her fugitives flee to Zoar, to Eglath-shelishiyah. For at the ascent of Luhith they go up weeping; on the road to Horonaim they raise a cry of destruction; | 5My heart cries out because of Moab's plight, and for the fugitives stretched out as far as Zoar and Eglath Shelishiyah. For they weep as they make their way up the ascent of Luhith; they loudly lament their demise on the road to Horonaim. |
the waters of Nimrim are a desolation; the grass is withered, the vegetation fails, the greenery is no more. | 6For the waters of Nimrim are gone; the grass is dried up, the vegetation has disappeared, and there are no plants. |
Therefore the abundance they have gained and what they have laid up they carry away over the Brook of the Willows. | 7For this reason what they have made and stored up, they carry over the Stream of the Poplars. |
For a cry has gone around the land of Moab; her wailing reaches to Eglaim; her wailing reaches to Beer-elim. | 8Indeed, the cries of distress echo throughout Moabite territory; their wailing can be heard in Eglaim and Beer Elim. |
For the waters of Dibon are full of blood; for I will bring upon Dibon even more, a lion for those of Moab who escape, for the remnant of the land. | 9Indeed, the waters of Dimon are full of blood! Indeed, I will heap even more trouble on Dimon. A lion will attack the Moabite fugitives and the people left in the land. |
