| 1For the LORD will have compassion on Jacob and will again choose Israel, and will set them in their own land, and sojourners will join them and will attach themselves to the house of Jacob. | 1The LORD will certainly have compassion on Jacob; he will again choose Israel as his special people and restore them to their land. Resident foreigners will join them and unite with the family of Jacob. |
| 2And the peoples will take them and bring them to their place, and the house of Israel will possess them in the LORD’s land as male and female slaves. They will take captive those who were their captors, and rule over those who oppressed them. | 2Nations will take them and bring them back to their own place. Then the family of Jacob will make foreigners their servants as they settle in the LORD's land. They will make their captors captives and rule over the ones who oppressed them. |
| 3When the LORD has given you rest from your pain and turmoil and the hard service with which you were made to serve, | 3When the LORD gives you relief from your suffering and anxiety, and from the hard labor which you were made to perform, |
| 4you will take up this taunt against the king of Babylon: “How the oppressor has ceased, the insolent fury ceased! | 4you will taunt the king of Babylon with these words: "Look how the oppressor has met his end! Hostility has ceased! |
| 5The LORD has broken the staff of the wicked, the scepter of rulers, | 5The LORD has broken the club of the wicked, the scepter of rulers. |
| 6that struck the peoples in wrath with unceasing blows, that ruled the nations in anger with unrelenting persecution. | 6It furiously struck down nations with unceasing blows. It angrily ruled over nations, oppressing them without restraint. |
| 7The whole earth is at rest and quiet; they break forth into singing. | 7The whole earth rests and is quiet; they break into song. |
| 8The cypresses rejoice at you, the cedars of Lebanon, saying, ‘Since you were laid low, no woodcutter comes up against us.’ | 8The evergreens also rejoice over your demise, as do the cedars of Lebanon, singing, 'Since you fell asleep, no woodsman comes up to chop us down!' |
| 9Sheol beneath is stirred up to meet you when you come; it rouses the shades to greet you, all who were leaders of the earth; it raises from their thrones all who were kings of the nations. | 9Sheol below is stirred up about you, ready to meet you when you arrive. It rouses the spirits of the dead for you, all the former leaders of the earth; it makes all the former kings of the nations rise from their thrones. |
| 10All of them will answer and say to you: ‘You too have become as weak as we! You have become like us!’ | 10All of them respond to you, saying: 'You too have become weak like us! You have become just like us! |
| 11Your pomp is brought down to Sheol, the sound of your harps; maggots are laid as a bed beneath you, and worms are your covers. | 11Your splendor has been brought down to Sheol, as well as the sound of your stringed instruments. You lie on a bed of maggots, with a blanket of worms over you. |
| 12“How you are fallen from heaven, O Day Star, son of Dawn! How you are cut down to the ground, you who laid the nations low! | 12Look how you have fallen from the sky, O shining one, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the ground, O conqueror of the nations! |
| 13You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; above the stars of God I will set my throne on high; I will sit on the mount of assembly in the far reaches of the north; | 13You said to yourself, "I will climb up to the sky. Above the stars of El I will set up my throne. I will rule on the mountain of assembly on the remote slopes of Zaphon. |
| 14I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’ | 14I will climb up to the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High!" |
| 15But you are brought down to Sheol, to the far reaches of the pit. | 15But you were brought down to Sheol, to the remote slopes of the pit. |
| 16Those who see you will stare at you and ponder over you: ‘Is this the man who made the earth tremble, who shook kingdoms, | 16Those who see you stare at you, they look at you carefully, thinking: "Is this the man who shook the earth, the one who made kingdoms tremble? |
| 17who made the world like a desert and overthrew its cities, who did not let his prisoners go home?’ | 17Is this the one who made the world like a desert, who ruined its cities, and refused to free his prisoners so they could return home?"' |
| 18All the kings of the nations lie in glory, each in his own tomb; | 18As for all the kings of the nations, all of them lie down in splendor, each in his own tomb. |
| 19but you are cast out, away from your grave, like a loathed branch, clothed with the slain, those pierced by the sword, who go down to the stones of the pit, like a dead body trampled underfoot. | 19But you have been thrown out of your grave like a shoot that is thrown away. You lie among the slain, among those who have been slashed by the sword, among those headed for the stones of the pit, as if you were a mangled corpse. |
| 20You will not be joined with them in burial, because you have destroyed your land, you have slain your people. “May the offspring of evildoers nevermore be named! | 20You will not be buried with them, because you destroyed your land and killed your people. The offspring of the wicked will never be mentioned again. |
| 21Prepare slaughter for his sons because of the guilt of their fathers, lest they rise and possess the earth, and fill the face of the world with cities.” | 21Prepare to execute his sons for the sins their ancestors have committed. They must not rise up and take possession of the earth, or fill the surface of the world with cities." |
| 22“I will rise up against them,” declares the LORD of hosts, “and will cut off from Babylon name and remnant, descendants and posterity,” declares the LORD. | 22"I will rise up against them," says the LORD who commands armies. "I will blot out all remembrance of Babylon and destroy all her people, including the offspring she produces," says the LORD. |
| 23“And I will make it a possession of the hedgehog, and pools of water, and I will sweep it with the broom of destruction,” declares the LORD of hosts. | 23"I will turn her into a place that is overrun with wild animals and covered with pools of stagnant water. I will get rid of her, just as one sweeps away dirt with a broom," says the LORD who commands armies. |
| 24The LORD of hosts has sworn: “As I have planned, so shall it be, and as I have purposed, so shall it stand, | 24The LORD who commands armies makes this solemn vow: "Be sure of this: Just as I have intended, so it will be; just as I have planned, it will happen. |
| 25that I will break the Assyrian in my land, and on my mountains trample him underfoot; and his yoke shall depart from them, and his burden from their shoulder.” | 25I will break Assyria in my land, I will trample them underfoot on my hills. Their yoke will be removed from my people, the burden will be lifted from their shoulders. |
| 26This is the purpose that is purposed concerning the whole earth, and this is the hand that is stretched out over all the nations. | 26This is the plan I have devised for the whole earth; my hand is ready to strike all the nations." |
| 27For the LORD of hosts has purposed, and who will annul it? His hand is stretched out, and who will turn it back? | 27Indeed, the LORD who commands armies has a plan, and who can possibly frustrate it? His hand is ready to strike, and who can possibly stop it? |
| 28In the year that King Ahaz died came this oracle: | 28In the year King Ahaz died, this message was revealed: |
| 29Rejoice not, O Philistia, all of you, that the rod that struck you is broken, for from the serpent’s root will come forth an adder, and its fruit will be a flying fiery serpent. | 29Don't be so happy, all you Philistines, just because the club that beat you has been broken! For a viper will grow out of the serpent's root, and its fruit will be a darting adder. |
| 30And the firstborn of the poor will graze, and the needy lie down in safety; but I will kill your root with famine, and your remnant it will slay. | 30The poor will graze in my pastures; the needy will rest securely. But I will kill your root by famine; it will put to death all your survivors. |
| 31Wail, O gate; cry out, O city; melt in fear, O Philistia, all of you! For smoke comes out of the north, and there is no straggler in his ranks. | 31Wail, O city gate! Cry out, O city! Melt with fear, all you Philistines! For out of the north comes a cloud of smoke, and there are no stragglers in its ranks. |
| 32What will one answer the messengers of the nation? “The LORD has founded Zion, and in her the afflicted of his people find refuge.” | 32How will they respond to the messengers of this nation? Indeed, the LORD has made Zion secure; the oppressed among his people will find safety in her. |
