Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle and singled out for God's good news--1Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, and set apart for the gospel of God—
which He promised long ago through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures--2the gospel He promised beforehand through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures,
concerning His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who was a descendant of David according to the flesh3regarding His Son, who was a descendant of David according to the flesh,
and who has been declared to be the powerful Son of God by the resurrection from the dead according to the Spirit of holiness.4and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by His resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.
We have received grace and apostleship through Him to bring about the obedience of faith among all the nations, on behalf of His name, 5Through Him and on behalf of His name, we received grace and apostleship to call all those among the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith.
including yourselves who also belong to Jesus Christ by calling: 6And you also are among those who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.
To all who are in Rome, loved by God, called as saints. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 7To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you because the news of your faith is being reported in all the world.8First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being proclaimed all over the world.
For God, whom I serve with my spirit in telling the good news about His Son, is my witness that I constantly mention you,9God, whom I serve with my spirit in preaching the gospel of His Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you
always asking in my prayers that if it is somehow in God's will, I may now at last succeed in coming to you.10in my prayers at all times, asking that now at last by God’s will I may succeed in coming to you.
For I want very much to see you, so I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you, 11For I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you,
that is, to be mutually encouraged by each other's faith, both yours and mine. 12that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith.
Now I want you to know, brothers, that I often planned to come to you (but was prevented until now) in order that I might have a fruitful ministry among you, just as among the rest of the Gentiles. 13I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, how often I planned to come to you (but have been prevented from visiting until now), in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles.
I am obligated both to Greeks and barbarians, both to the wise and the foolish. 14I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish.
So I am eager to preach the good news to you also who are in Rome. 15That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are in Rome.
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is God's power for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek.16I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew, then to the Greek.
For in it God's righteousness is revealed from faith to faith, just as it is written: The righteous will live by faith. 17For the gospel reveals the righteousness of God that comes by faith from start to finish, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”
For God's wrath is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of people who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth,18The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness.
since what can be known about God is evident among them, because God has shown it to them. 19For what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.
For His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world, being understood through what He has made. As a result, people are without excuse. 20For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood from His workmanship, so that men are without excuse.
For though they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God or show gratitude. Instead, their thinking became nonsense, and their senseless minds were darkened.21For although they knew God, they neither glorified Him as God nor gave thanks to Him, but they became futile in their thinking and darkened in their foolish hearts.
Claiming to be wise, they became fools22Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools,
and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man, birds, four-footed animals, and reptiles. 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images of mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.
Therefore God delivered them over in the cravings of their hearts to sexual impurity, so that their bodies were degraded among themselves. 24Therefore God gave them over in the desires of their hearts to impurity for the dishonoring of their bodies with one another.
They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served something created instead of the Creator, who is praised forever. Amen. 25They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is forever worthy of praise! Amen.
This is why God delivered them over to degrading passions. For even their females exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones.26For this reason God gave them over to dishonorable passions. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones.
The males in the same way also left natural relations with females and were inflamed in their lust for one another. Males committed shameless acts with males and received in their own persons the appropriate penalty of their error. 27Likewise, the men abandoned natural relations with women and burned with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.
And because they did not think it worthwhile to acknowledge God, God delivered them over to a worthless mind to do what is morally wrong. 28Furthermore, since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, He gave them up to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done.
They are filled with all unrighteousness, evil, greed, and wickedness. They are full of envy, murder, quarrels, deceit, and malice. They are gossips,29They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed, and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice. They are gossips,
slanderers, God-haters, arrogant, proud, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents,30slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant, and boastful. They invent new forms of evil; they disobey their parents.
undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, and unmerciful. 31They are senseless, faithless, heartless, merciless.
Although they know full well God's just sentence--that those who practice such things deserve to die--they not only do them, but even applaud others who practice them. 32Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things are worthy of death, they not only continue to do these things, but also approve of those who practice them.
