Holman Christian Standard Bible | English Standard Version |
So if you have been raised with the Messiah, seek what is above, where the Messiah is, seated at the right hand of God. | 1If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. |
Set your minds on what is above, not on what is on the earth. | 2Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. |
For you have died, and your life is hidden with the Messiah in God. | 3For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. |
When the Messiah, who is your life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory. | 4When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. |
Therefore, put to death what belongs to your worldly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desire, and greed, which is idolatry. | 5Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. |
Because of these, God's wrath comes on the disobedient, | 6On account of these the wrath of God is coming. |
and you once walked in these things when you were living in them. | 7In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. |
But now you must also put away all the following: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and filthy language from your mouth. | 8But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. |
Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old self with its practices | 9Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices |
and have put on the new self. You are being renewed in knowledge according to the image of your Creator. | 10and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. |
In Christ there is not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ is all and in all. | 11Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all. |
Therefore, God's chosen ones, holy and loved, put on heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, | 12Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, |
accepting one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a complaint against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must also forgive. | 13bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. |
Above all, put on love--the perfect bond of unity. | 14And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. |
And let the peace of the Messiah, to which you were also called in one body, control your hearts. Be thankful. | 15And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. |
Let the message about the Messiah dwell richly among you, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, and singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, with gratitude in your hearts to God. | 16Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. |
And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. | 17And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. |
Wives, be submissive to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. | 18Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. |
Husbands, love your wives and don't be bitter toward them. | 19Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them. |
Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. | 20Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. |
Fathers, do not exasperate your children, so they won't become discouraged. | 21Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged. |
Slaves, obey your human masters in everything. Don't work only while being watched, in order to please men, but work wholeheartedly, fearing the Lord. | 22Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. |
Whatever you do, do it enthusiastically, as something done for the Lord and not for men, | 23Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, |
knowing that you will receive the reward of an inheritance from the Lord. You serve the Lord Christ. | 24knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. |
For the wrongdoer will be paid back for whatever wrong he has done, and there is no favoritism. | 25For the wrongdoer will be paid back for the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality. |
