On the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet: " | 1On the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the LORD spoke again through the prophet Haggai: |
Speak to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, to the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and to the remnant of the people: | 2"Ask the following questions to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the remnant of the people: |
Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Doesn't it seem like nothing to you? | 3Who among you survivors saw the former splendor of this temple? How does it look to you now? Isn't it nothing by comparison? |
Even so, be strong, Zerubbabel"--this is the LORD's declaration. "Be strong, Joshua son of Jehozadak, high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land"--this is the LORD's declaration. "Work! For I am with you"--the declaration of the LORD of Hosts. " | 4Even so, take heart, Zerubbabel,' says the LORD. 'Take heart, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and all you citizens of the land,' says the LORD, 'and begin to work. For I am with you,' says the LORD who rules over all. |
This is the promise I made to you when you came out of Egypt, and My Spirit is present among you; don't be afraid." | 5Do not fear, because I made a promise to your ancestors when they left Egypt, and my spirit even now testifies to you.' |
For the LORD of Hosts says this: "Once more, in a little while, I am going to shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land. | 6Moreover, the LORD who rules over all says: 'In just a little while I will once again shake the sky and the earth, the sea and the dry ground. |
I will shake all the nations so that the treasures of all the nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory," says the LORD of Hosts. " | 7I will also shake up all the nations, and they will offer their treasures; then I will fill this temple with glory,' says the LORD who rules over all. |
The silver and gold belong to Me"--this is the declaration of the LORD of Hosts. " | 8The silver and gold will be mine,' says the LORD who rules over all. |
The final glory of this house will be greater than the first," says the LORD of Hosts. "I will provide peace in this place"--this is the declaration of the LORD of Hosts. | 9The future splendor of this temple will be greater than that of former times,' the LORD who rules over all declares, 'and in this place I will give peace.'" |
On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to Haggai the prophet: " | 10On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month of Darius' second year, the LORD spoke again to the prophet Haggai: |
This is what the LORD of Hosts says: Ask the priests for a ruling. | 11"The LORD who rules over all says, 'Ask the priests about the law. |
If a man is carrying consecrated meat in the fold of his garment, and it touches bread, stew, wine, oil, or any other food, does it become holy?" The priests answered, "No." | 12If someone carries holy meat in a fold of his garment and that fold touches bread, a boiled dish, wine, olive oil, or any other food, will that item become holy?'" The priests answered, "It will not." |
Then Haggai asked, "If someone defiled by contact with a corpse touches any of these, does it become defiled?" The priests answered, "It becomes defiled." | 13Then Haggai asked, "If a person who is ritually unclean because of touching a dead body comes in contact with one of these items, will it become unclean?" The priests answered, "It will be unclean." |
Then Haggai replied, "So is this people, and so is this nation before Me"--this is the LORD's declaration. "And so is every work of their hands; even what they offer there is defiled." | 14Then Haggai responded, "'The people of this nation are unclean in my sight,' says the LORD. 'And so is all their effort; everything they offer is also unclean. |
Now, reflect back from this day: Before one stone was placed on another in the LORD's temple, | 15Now therefore reflect carefully on the recent past, before one stone was laid on another in the LORD's temple. |
what state were you in? When someone came to a grain heap of 20 measures, it only amounted to 10; when one came to the winepress to dip 50 measures from the vat, it only amounted to 20. | 16From that time when one came expecting a heap of twenty measures, there were only ten; when one came to the wine vat to draw out fifty measures from it, there were only twenty. |
I struck you--all the work of your hands--with blight, mildew, and hail, but you didn't turn to Me"--this is the LORD's declaration. " | 17I struck all the products of your labor with blight, disease, and hail, and yet you brought nothing to me,' says the LORD. |
Consider carefully from this day forward; from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, from the day the foundation of the LORD's temple was laid; consider it carefully. | 18Think carefully about the past: from today, the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, to the day work on the temple of the LORD was resumed, think about it. |
Is there still seed left in the granary? The vine, the fig, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have not yet produced. But from this day on I will bless you." | 19The seed is still in the storehouse, isn't it? And the vine, fig tree, pomegranate, and olive tree have not produced. Nevertheless, from today on I will bless you.'" |
The word of the LORD came to Haggai a second time on the twenty-fourth day of the month: " | 20Then the LORD spoke again to Haggai on the twenty-fourth day of the month: |
Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah: I am going to shake the heavens and the earth. | 21Tell Zerubbabel governor of Judah: 'I am ready to shake the sky and the earth. |
I will overturn royal thrones and destroy the power of the Gentile kingdoms. I will overturn chariots and their riders. Horses and their riders will fall, each by his brother's sword. | 22I will overthrow royal thrones and shatter the might of earthly kingdoms. I will overthrow chariots and those who ride them, and horses and their riders will fall as people kill one another. |
On that day"--this is the declaration of the LORD of Hosts--"I will take you, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, My servant"--this is the LORD's declaration--"and make you like My signet ring, for I have chosen you." This is the declaration of the LORD of Hosts. | 23On that day,' says the LORD who rules over all, 'I will take you, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, my servant,' says the LORD, 'and I will make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you,' says the LORD who rules over all." |
