and Jacob fathered Joseph the husband of Mary, who gave birth to Jesus who is called the Messiah. | 16and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah. |
So all the generations from Abraham to David were 14 generations; and from David until the exile to Babylon, 14 generations; and from the exile to Babylon until the Messiah, 14 generations. | 17Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah. |
The birth of Jesus Christ came about this way: After His mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, it was discovered before they came together that she was pregnant by the Holy Spirit. | 18This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. |
So her husband Joseph, being a righteous man, and not wanting to disgrace her publicly, decided to divorce her secretly. | 19Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. |
But after he had considered these things, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, don't be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because what has been conceived in her is by the Holy Spirit. | 20But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. |
She will give birth to a son, and you are to name Him Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins." | 21She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." |
Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: | 22All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: |
See, the virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will name Him Immanuel, which is translated "God is with us." | 23"The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" (which means "God with us"). |
When Joseph got up from sleeping, he did as the Lord's angel had commanded him. He married her | 24When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. |
but did not know her intimately until she gave birth to a son. And he named Him Jesus. | 25But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus. |
