Psalm 73
HCSB Parallel NIV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
Holman Christian Standard BibleNew International Version
A psalm of Asaph. God is indeed good to Israel, to the pure in heart. 1A psalm of Asaph. Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart.
But as for me, my feet almost slipped; my steps nearly went astray. 2But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold.
For I envied the arrogant; I saw the prosperity of the wicked. 3For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
They have an easy time until they die, and their bodies are well fed. 4They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong.
They are not in trouble like others; they are not afflicted like most people. 5They are free from common human burdens; they are not plagued by human ills.
Therefore, pride is their necklace, and violence covers them like a garment. 6Therefore pride is their necklace; they clothe themselves with violence.
Their eyes bulge out from fatness; the imaginations of their hearts run wild. 7From their callous hearts comes iniquity; their evil imaginations have no limits.
They mock, and they speak maliciously; they arrogantly threaten oppression. 8They scoff, and speak with malice; with arrogance they threaten oppression.
They set their mouths against heaven, and their tongues strut across the earth. 9Their mouths lay claim to heaven, and their tongues take possession of the earth.
Therefore His people turn to them and drink in their overflowing words. 10Therefore their people turn to them and drink up waters in abundance.
The wicked say, "How can God know? Does the Most High know everything?" 11They say, "How would God know? Does the Most High know anything?"
Look at them--the wicked! They are always at ease, and they increase their wealth. 12This is what the wicked are like-- always free of care, they go on amassing wealth.
Did I purify my heart and wash my hands in innocence for nothing? 13Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and have washed my hands in innocence.
For I am afflicted all day long and punished every morning. 14All day long I have been afflicted, and every morning brings new punishments.
If I had decided to say these things aloud, I would have betrayed Your people. 15If I had spoken out like that, I would have betrayed your children.
When I tried to understand all this, it seemed hopeless 16When I tried to understand all this, it troubled me deeply
until I entered God's sanctuary. Then I understood their destiny. 17till I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny.
Indeed, You put them in slippery places; You make them fall into ruin. 18Surely you place them on slippery ground; you cast them down to ruin.
How suddenly they become a desolation! They come to an end, swept away by terrors. 19How suddenly are they destroyed, completely swept away by terrors!
Like one waking from a dream, Lord, when arising, You will despise their image. 20They are like a dream when one awakes; when you arise, Lord, you will despise them as fantasies.
When I became embittered and my innermost being was wounded, 21When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered,
I was stupid and didn't understand; I was an unthinking animal toward You. 22I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you.
Yet I am always with You; You hold my right hand. 23Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand.
You guide me with Your counsel, and afterward You will take me up in glory. 24You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory.
Who do I have in heaven but You? And I desire nothing on earth but You. 25Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.
My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart, my portion forever. 26My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Those far from You will certainly perish; You destroy all who are unfaithful to You. 27Those who are far from you will perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you.
But as for me, God's presence is my good. I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, so I can tell about all You do. 28But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds.
