Therefore, as a fellow elder, a witness of the Messiah's sufferings, and one who shares in the glory to be revealed, I appeal to the elders among you: 1I exhort the elders among you as a fellow elder and witness to the sufferings of Christ, as well as one who shares in the glory about to be revealed:
Be shepherds of God's flock that is among you, watching over it, not because you must but because you want to, and not greedily but eagerly, as God desires. 2Shepherd God's flock among you, not overseeing out of compulsion but willingly, as God would have you; not out of greed for money but eagerly;
Do not lord it over the people entrusted to you, but be examples to the flock. 3not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.
Then, when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the victor's crown of glory that will never fade away.4And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.
In a similar way, you young people must submit to the elders. All of you must clothe yourselves with humility for the sake of each other, because: "God opposes the arrogant, but gives grace to the humble." 5In the same way, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. All of you clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.
Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, so that at the proper time he may exalt you. 6Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you at the proper time,
Throw all your worry on him, because he cares for you. 7casting all your cares on him, because he cares about you.
Be clear-minded and alert. Your opponent, the devil, is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. 8Be sober-minded, be alert. Your adversary the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour.
Resist him and be firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering. 9Resist him, firm in the faith, knowing that the same kind of sufferings are being experienced by your fellow believers throughout the world.
After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you by the Messiah Jesus to his eternal glory, will restore you, establish you, strengthen you, and support you. 10The God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, establish, strengthen, and support you after you have suffered a little while.
Power belongs to him forever and ever! Amen.11To him be dominion forever. Amen.
Through Silvanus, whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written this short letter to encourage you and to testify that this is to be the true grace of God in which you are to stand firm! 12Through Silvanus, a faithful brother (as I consider him), I have written to you briefly in order to encourage you and to testify that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it!
Your sister church in Babylon, chosen along with you, sends you greetings, as does Mark, whom I regard as a son. 13She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings, as does Mark, my son.
Greet one another with a loving kiss. Peace be to all of you who are in the Messiah! 14Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ.
