These are the names of the Israelis who entered Egypt with Jacob, each one having come with his family: | 1Now these are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob; they came each one with his household: |
Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, | 2Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah; |
Issacar, Zebulun, Benjamin, | 3Issachar, Zebulun and Benjamin; |
Dan, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher. | 4Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. |
All those who descended from Jacob totaled 75 persons. Now Joseph was already in Egypt. | 5All the persons who came from the loins of Jacob were seventy in number, but Joseph was already in Egypt. |
Then Joseph, all his brothers, and that entire generation died. | 6Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that generation. |
But the Israelis were fruitful and increased abundantly. They multiplied in numbers and became very, very strong. As a result, the land was filled with them. | 7But the sons of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly, and multiplied, and became exceedingly mighty, so that the land was filled with them. |
Eventually a new king who was unacquainted with Joseph came to power in Egypt. | 8Now a new king arose over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. |
He told his people, "Look, the Israeli people are more numerous and more powerful than we are. | 9He said to his people, "Behold, the people of the sons of Israel are more and mightier than we. |
Come on, let's be careful how we treat them, so that when they grow numerous, if a war breaks out they won't join our enemies, fight against us, and leave our land." | 10"Come, let us deal wisely with them, or else they will multiply and in the event of war, they will also join themselves to those who hate us, and fight against us and depart from the land." |
So the Egyptians placed supervisors over them, oppressing them with heavy burdens. The Israelis built the supply cities of Pithom and Rameses for Pharaoh. | 11So they appointed taskmasters over them to afflict them with hard labor. And they built for Pharaoh storage cities, Pithom and Raamses. |
But the more the Egyptians afflicted the Israelis, the more they multiplied and flourished, so that the Egyptians became terrified of the Israelis. | 12But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they spread out, so that they were in dread of the sons of Israel. |
The Egyptians ruthlessly forced the Israelis to serve them, | 13The Egyptians compelled the sons of Israel to labor rigorously; |
making their lives bitter through hard labor with mortar, bricks, and all kinds of outdoor labor. They ruthlessly imposed all this work on them. | 14and they made their lives bitter with hard labor in mortar and bricks and at all kinds of labor in the field, all their labors which they rigorously imposed on them. |
Later, the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah. | 15Then the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other was named Puah; |
"When you help the Hebrew women give birth," he said, "watch them as they deliver. If it's a son, kill him; but if it's a daughter, let her live." | 16and he said, "When you are helping the Hebrew women to give birth and see them upon the birthstool, if it is a son, then you shall put him to death; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live." |
But the midwives feared God and didn't do what the king of Egypt told them. Instead, they let the boys live. | 17But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt had commanded them, but let the boys live. |
When the king of Egypt called for the midwives, he asked them, "Why have you done this and allowed the boys to live?" | 18So the king of Egypt called for the midwives and said to them, "Why have you done this thing, and let the boys live?" |
"Hebrew women aren't like Egyptian women," the midwives replied to Pharaoh. "They're so healthy that they give birth before the midwives arrive to help them." | 19The midwives said to Pharaoh, "Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife can get to them." |
God was pleased with the midwives, and the people multiplied and became very strong. | 20So God was good to the midwives, and the people multiplied, and became very mighty. |
Because the midwives feared God, he provided families for them. | 21Because the midwives feared God, He established households for them. |
Meanwhile, Pharaoh continued commanding all of his people, "You're to throw every Hebrew son who is born into the Nile River, but you're to allow every Hebrew daughter to live." | 22Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, "Every son who is born you are to cast into the Nile, and every daughter you are to keep alive." |
