Deuteronomy 14
ISV Parallel NIV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
International Standard VersionNew International Version
"You are children of the LORD your God. You must not lacerate yourselves or shave your foreheads on account of the dead, 1You are the children of the LORD your God. Do not cut yourselves or shave the front of your heads for the dead,
because you are a holy people to the LORD your God, and the LORD chose to make you his precious possession from among all the peoples of the earth."2for you are a people holy to the LORD your God. Out of all the peoples on the face of the earth, the LORD has chosen you to be his treasured possession.
"You must not eat any detestable food. 3Do not eat any detestable thing.
These are the animals that you may eat: ox, sheep, goat, 4These are the animals you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat,
deer, gazelle, roebuck, wild goat, ibex, antelope, and mountain sheep. 5the deer, the gazelle, the roe deer, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope and the mountain sheep.
You may eat every animal with a divided hoof—those with split cloven hooves—that chews the cud. 6You may eat any animal that has a divided hoof and that chews the cud.
However, you must not eat these animals that chew the cud or have a divided hoof: the camel, hare, and rock badger. Even though they chew the cud, their hooves are not divided. Therefore they are unclean for you. 7However, of those that chew the cud or that have a divided hoof you may not eat the camel, the rabbit or the hyrax. Although they chew the cud, they do not have a divided hoof; they are ceremonially unclean for you.
And also the pig, because even though its hoof is divided, it does not chew the cud. It is therefore unclean for you. You must not eat their meat or even touch their carcasses.8The pig is also unclean; although it has a divided hoof, it does not chew the cud. You are not to eat their meat or touch their carcasses.
"You may choose to eat from these creatures in the water: you may eat anything with fin and scale, 9Of all the creatures living in the water, you may eat any that has fins and scales.
but you may not eat anything without fin and scale, since it is unclean to you.10But anything that does not have fins and scales you may not eat; for you it is unclean.
"You may eat all clean birds. 11You may eat any clean bird.
But you must not eat from any of these: the eagle, vulture, osprey, 12But these you may not eat: the eagle, the vulture, the black vulture,
buzzard, any kind of kite, 13the red kite, the black kite, any kind of falcon,
any kind of raven, 14any kind of raven,
the ostrich, night hawk, seagull, any kind of falcon, 15the horned owl, the screech owl, the gull, any kind of hawk,
the little owl, the great owl, the horned owl, 16the little owl, the great owl, the white owl,
the pelican, the carrion vulture, the cormorant, 17the desert owl, the osprey, the cormorant,
the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe, and the bat. 18the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe and the bat.
Any winged, swarming insect is unclean to you. They must not be eaten. 19All flying insects are unclean to you; do not eat them.
You may eat every bird that is clean.20But any winged creature that is clean you may eat.
"You must not eat any carcass. But you may give it to the alien in your cities so he may eat it or sell it to a foreigner, for you are a holy people to the LORD your God. "You must not cook a young goat in its mother's milk."21Do not eat anything you find already dead. You may give it to the foreigner residing in any of your towns, and they may eat it, or you may sell it to any other foreigner. But you are a people holy to the LORD your God. Do not cook a young goat in its mother's milk.
"Be sure to tithe annually from everything you plant that yields a harvest in the field. 22Be sure to set aside a tenth of all that your fields produce each year.
Then in the presence of the LORD your God, in the place where he'll choose to establish his name, you may consume the tithe of your grain, your new wine, your oil, and the firstborn of your livestock and flock, so that you'll learn to revere the LORD your God all your life. 23Eat the tithe of your grain, new wine and olive oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the presence of the LORD your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name, so that you may learn to revere the LORD your God always.
Now the way may be distant from you, so that you are unable to transport your tithe because you have been blessed by the LORD your God and the place where the LORD your God chooses to establish his name may be distant from you. 24But if that place is too distant and you have been blessed by the LORD your God and cannot carry your tithe (because the place where the LORD will choose to put his Name is so far away),
In that case, convert it into cash, secure the money, and then bring it to the place where the LORD will choose. 25then exchange your tithe for silver, and take the silver with you and go to the place the LORD your God will choose.
You may spend the money to your heart's content to buy livestock, flocks, wine, strong drink, and whatever you desire. You and your household may eat there and rejoice in the presence of the LORD your God."26Use the silver to buy whatever you like: cattle, sheep, wine or other fermented drink, or anything you wish. Then you and your household shall eat there in the presence of the LORD your God and rejoice.
"But you must not forget the descendant of Levi in your town because there is no tribal allotment for him as there is for you. 27And do not neglect the Levites living in your towns, for they have no allotment or inheritance of their own.
Every third year, bring all the tithes of your produce of that year and store it in your cities 28At the end of every three years, bring all the tithes of that year's produce and store it in your towns,
so the descendants of Levi—who have no tribal allotment as you do—foreigners, orphans, and widows who live in your cities may come, eat, and be satisfied. That way, the LORD your God shall bless you in everything you do." 29so that the Levites (who have no allotment or inheritance of their own) and the foreigners, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns may come and eat and be satisfied, and so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.
