My son, if you guarantee a loan for your neighbor, if you have agreed to a deal with a stranger, | 1My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor, if you have shaken hands in pledge for a stranger, |
trapped by your own words, and caught by your own words, | 2you have been trapped by what you said, ensnared by the words of your mouth. |
then do this, my son, and deliver yourself, because you have come under your neighbor's control. Go, humble yourself! Plead passionately with your neighbor! | 3So do this, my son, to free yourself, since you have fallen into your neighbor's hands: Go--to the point of exhaustion-- and give your neighbor no rest! |
Don't allow yourself to sleep or even to close your eyes. | 4Allow no sleep to your eyes, no slumber to your eyelids. |
Deliver yourself like a gazelle from a hunter's hand, or like a bird from a fowler's hand. | 5Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the snare of the fowler. |
Go to the ant, you lazy man! Observe its ways and become wise. | 6Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! |
It has no commander, officer, or ruler, | 7It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, |
but prepares its provisions in the summer and gathers its food in the harvest. | 8yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest. |
How long will you lie down, lazy man? When will you get up from your sleep? | 9How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? |
A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, | 10A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest-- |
and your poverty will come on you like a bandit and your desperation like an armed man. | 11and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man. |
A worthless man, a wicked man, goes around with devious speech, | 12A troublemaker and a villain, who goes about with a corrupt mouth, |
winking with his eyes, making signs with his feet, pointing with his fingers, | 13who winks maliciously with his eye, signals with his feet and motions with his fingers, |
planning evil with a perverse mind, continually stirring up discord. | 14who plots evil with deceit in his heart-- he always stirs up conflict. |
Therefore, disaster will overtake him suddenly. He will be broken in an instant, and he will never recover. | 15Therefore disaster will overtake him in an instant; he will suddenly be destroyed--without remedy. |
Here are six things that the LORD hates— seven, in fact, are detestable to him: | 16There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him: |
Arrogant eyes, a lying tongue, and hands shedding innocent blood; | 17haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, |
a heart crafting evil plans, feet running swiftly to wickedness, | 18a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, |
a false witness snorting lies, and someone sowing quarrels between brothers. | 19a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community. |
Keep your father's commands, my son, and never forsake your mother's rules, | 20My son, keep your father's command and do not forsake your mother's teaching. |
by binding them to your heart continuously, fastening them around your neck. | 21Bind them always on your heart; fasten them around your neck. |
During your travels wisdom will lead you; she will watch over you while you rest; and when you are startled from your sleep, she will commune with you. | 22When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you. |
Because the command is a lamp and the Law a light, rebukes that discipline are a way of life— | 23For this command is a lamp, this teaching is a light, and correction and instruction are the way to life, |
to protect you from the evil woman, from the words of the seductive woman. | 24keeping you from your neighbor's wife, from the smooth talk of a wayward woman. |
Do not focus on her beauty in your mind, nor allow her to take you prisoner with her flirting eyes, | 25Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes. |
because the price of a whore is a loaf of bread, and an adulterous woman stalks a man's precious life. | 26For a prostitute can be had for a loaf of bread, but another man's wife preys on your very life. |
Can a man scoop fire into his bosom without burning his clothes? | 27Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned? |
Can a man walk on hot coals without scorching his feet? | 28Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched? |
So also is it with someone who has sex with his neighbor's wife; anyone touching her will not remain unpunished. | 29So is he who sleeps with another man's wife; no one who touches her will go unpunished. |
A thief isn't despised if he steals to meet his needs when he is hungry, | 30People do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his hunger when he is starving. |
but when he is discovered, he must restore seven-fold, forfeiting the entire value of his house. | 31Yet if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold, though it costs him all the wealth of his house. |
Whoever commits adultery with a woman is out of his mind; by doing so he corrupts his own soul. | 32But a man who commits adultery has no sense; whoever does so destroys himself. |
He will receive a beating and dishonor, and his shame won't disappear, | 33Blows and disgrace are his lot, and his shame will never be wiped away. |
because jealousy incites a strong man's rage, and he will show no mercy when it's time for revenge. | 34For jealousy arouses a husband's fury, and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge. |
He will not consider any payment, nor will he be willing to accept it, no matter how large the bribe. | 35He will not accept any compensation; he will refuse a bribe, however great it is. |
