Proverbs 6
ISV Parallel NIV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
International Standard VersionNew International Version
My son, if you guarantee a loan for your neighbor, if you have agreed to a deal with a stranger,1My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor, if you have shaken hands in pledge for a stranger,
trapped by your own words, and caught by your own words,2you have been trapped by what you said, ensnared by the words of your mouth.
then do this, my son, and deliver yourself, because you have come under your neighbor's control. Go, humble yourself! Plead passionately with your neighbor!3So do this, my son, to free yourself, since you have fallen into your neighbor's hands: Go--to the point of exhaustion-- and give your neighbor no rest!
Don't allow yourself to sleep or even to close your eyes.4Allow no sleep to your eyes, no slumber to your eyelids.
Deliver yourself like a gazelle from a hunter's hand, or like a bird from a fowler's hand.5Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the snare of the fowler.
Go to the ant, you lazy man! Observe its ways and become wise.6Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander, officer, or ruler,7It has no commander, no overseer or ruler,
but prepares its provisions in the summer and gathers its food in the harvest.8yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.
How long will you lie down, lazy man? When will you get up from your sleep?9How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep?
A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest,10A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest--
and your poverty will come on you like a bandit and your desperation like an armed man.11and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man.
A worthless man, a wicked man, goes around with devious speech,12A troublemaker and a villain, who goes about with a corrupt mouth,
winking with his eyes, making signs with his feet, pointing with his fingers,13who winks maliciously with his eye, signals with his feet and motions with his fingers,
planning evil with a perverse mind, continually stirring up discord.14who plots evil with deceit in his heart-- he always stirs up conflict.
Therefore, disaster will overtake him suddenly. He will be broken in an instant, and he will never recover.15Therefore disaster will overtake him in an instant; he will suddenly be destroyed--without remedy.
Here are six things that the LORD hates— seven, in fact, are detestable to him: 16There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him:
Arrogant eyes, a lying tongue, and hands shedding innocent blood;17haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,
a heart crafting evil plans, feet running swiftly to wickedness,18a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil,
a false witness snorting lies, and someone sowing quarrels between brothers.19a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.
Keep your father's commands, my son, and never forsake your mother's rules, 20My son, keep your father's command and do not forsake your mother's teaching.
by binding them to your heart continuously, fastening them around your neck.21Bind them always on your heart; fasten them around your neck.
During your travels wisdom will lead you; she will watch over you while you rest; and when you are startled from your sleep, she will commune with you.22When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you.
Because the command is a lamp and the Law a light, rebukes that discipline are a way of life—23For this command is a lamp, this teaching is a light, and correction and instruction are the way to life,
to protect you from the evil woman, from the words of the seductive woman.24keeping you from your neighbor's wife, from the smooth talk of a wayward woman.
Do not focus on her beauty in your mind, nor allow her to take you prisoner with her flirting eyes,25Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes.
because the price of a whore is a loaf of bread, and an adulterous woman stalks a man's precious life.26For a prostitute can be had for a loaf of bread, but another man's wife preys on your very life.
Can a man scoop fire into his bosom without burning his clothes?27Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned?
Can a man walk on hot coals without scorching his feet?28Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched?
So also is it with someone who has sex with his neighbor's wife; anyone touching her will not remain unpunished.29So is he who sleeps with another man's wife; no one who touches her will go unpunished.
A thief isn't despised if he steals to meet his needs when he is hungry,30People do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his hunger when he is starving.
but when he is discovered, he must restore seven-fold, forfeiting the entire value of his house.31Yet if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold, though it costs him all the wealth of his house.
Whoever commits adultery with a woman is out of his mind; by doing so he corrupts his own soul.32But a man who commits adultery has no sense; whoever does so destroys himself.
He will receive a beating and dishonor, and his shame won't disappear,33Blows and disgrace are his lot, and his shame will never be wiped away.
because jealousy incites a strong man's rage, and he will show no mercy when it's time for revenge.34For jealousy arouses a husband's fury, and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge.
He will not consider any payment, nor will he be willing to accept it, no matter how large the bribe.35He will not accept any compensation; he will refuse a bribe, however great it is.
