After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.1After this, a Jewish festival took place, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.2By the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem there is a pool, called Bethesda in Aramaic, which has five colonnades.
In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.3Within these lay a large number of the disabled--blind, lame, and paralyzed.
For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.4
And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.5One man was there who had been disabled for thirty-eight years.
When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?6When Jesus saw him lying there and realized he had already been there a long time, he said to him, "Do you want to get well?"
The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.7"Sir," the disabled man answered, "I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I'm coming, someone goes down ahead of me."
Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.8"Get up," Jesus told him, "pick up your mat and walk."
And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.9Instantly the man got well, picked up his mat, and started to walk. Now that day was the Sabbath,
The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.10and so the Jews said to the man who had been healed, "This is the Sabbath. The law prohibits you from picking up your mat."
He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.11He replied, "The man who made me well told me, 'Pick up your mat and walk.' "
Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?12"Who is this man who told you, 'Pick up your mat and walk'?" they asked.
And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.13But the man who was healed did not know who it was, because Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.
Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.14After this, Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, "See, you are well. Do not sin anymore, so that something worse doesn't happen to you."
The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.15The man went and reported to the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.16Therefore, the Jews began persecuting Jesus because he was doing these things on the Sabbath.
But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.17Jesus responded to them, "My Father is still working, and I am working also."
Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.18This is why the Jews began trying all the more to kill him: Not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal to God.
Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.19Jesus replied, "Truly I tell you, the Son is not able to do anything on his own, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, the Son likewise does these things.
For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.20For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he is doing, and he will show him greater works than these so that you will be amazed.
For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.21And just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so the Son also gives life to whom he wants.
For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:22The Father, in fact, judges no one but has given all judgment to the Son,
That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.23so that all people may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Anyone who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.24"Truly I tell you, anyone who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not come under judgment but has passed from death to life.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.25"Truly I tell you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.
For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;26For just as the Father has life in himself, so also he has granted to the Son to have life in himself.
And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.27And he has granted him the right to pass judgment, because he is the Son of Man.
Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,28Do not be amazed at this, because a time is coming when all who are in the graves will hear his voice
And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.29and come out--those who have done good things, to the resurrection of life, but those who have done wicked things, to the resurrection of condemnation.
I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.30"I can do nothing on my own. I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, because I do not seek my own will, but the will of him who sent me.
If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.31"If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true.
There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.32There is another who testifies about me, and I know that the testimony he gives about me is true.
Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.33You sent messengers to John, and he testified to the truth.
But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.34I don't receive human testimony, but I say these things so that you may be saved.
He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.35John was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.
But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.36"But I have a greater testimony than John's because of the works that the Father has given me to accomplish. These very works I am doing testify about me that the Father has sent me.
And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.37The Father who sent me has himself testified about me. You have not heard his voice at any time, and you haven't seen his form.
And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.38You don't have his word residing in you, because you don't believe the one he sent.
Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.39You pore over the Scriptures because you think you have eternal life in them, and yet they testify about me.
And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.40But you are not willing to come to me so that you may have life.
I receive not honour from men.41"I do not accept glory from people,
But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.42but I know you--that you have no love for God within you.
I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.43I have come in my Father's name, and yet you don't accept me. If someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him.
How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?44How can you believe, since you accept glory from one another but don't seek the glory that comes from the only God?
Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.45Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom you have set your hope.
For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.46For if you believed Moses, you would believe me, because he wrote about me.
But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?47But if you don't believe what he wrote, how will you believe my words?"
