King James Bible | English Standard Version |
And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; | 1And you were dead in the trespasses and sins |
Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: | 2in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— |
Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. | 3among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. |
But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, | 4But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, |
Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) | 5even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— |
And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: | 6and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, |
That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. | 7so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. |
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: | 8For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, |
Not of works, lest any man should boast. | 9not a result of works, so that no one may boast. |
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. | 10For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. |
Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands; | 11Therefore remember that at one time you Gentiles in the flesh, called “the uncircumcision” by what is called the circumcision, which is made in the flesh by hands— |
That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: | 12remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. |
But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. | 13But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. |
For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; | 14For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility |
Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; | 15by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, |
And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: | 16and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility. |
And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. | 17And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. |
For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father. | 18For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. |
Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; | 19So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, |
And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; | 20built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, |
In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: | 21in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. |
In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit. | 22In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit. |
