| 1The word of the LORD came again unto me, saying, | 1The word of the LORD came to me: |
| 2Now, thou son of man, take up a lamentation for Tyrus; | 2"Son of man, take up a lament concerning Tyre. |
| 3And say unto Tyrus, O thou that art situate at the entry of the sea, which art a merchant of the people for many isles, Thus saith the Lord GOD; O Tyrus, thou hast said, I am of perfect beauty. | 3Say to Tyre, situated at the gateway to the sea, merchant of peoples on many coasts, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: "'You say, Tyre, "I am perfect in beauty." |
| 4Thy borders are in the midst of the seas, thy builders have perfected thy beauty. | 4Your domain was on the high seas; your builders brought your beauty to perfection. |
| 5They have made all thy ship boards of fir trees of Senir: they have taken cedars from Lebanon to make masts for thee. | 5They made all your timbers of juniper from Senir; they took a cedar from Lebanon to make a mast for you. |
| 6Of the oaks of Bashan have they made thine oars; the company of the Ashurites have made thy benches of ivory, brought out of the isles of Chittim. | 6Of oaks from Bashan they made your oars; of cypress wood from the coasts of Cyprus they made your deck, adorned with ivory. |
| 7Fine linen with broidered work from Egypt was that which thou spreadest forth to be thy sail; blue and purple from the isles of Elishah was that which covered thee. | 7Fine embroidered linen from Egypt was your sail and served as your banner; your awnings were of blue and purple from the coasts of Elishah. |
| 8The inhabitants of Zidon and Arvad were thy mariners: thy wise men, O Tyrus, that were in thee, were thy pilots. | 8Men of Sidon and Arvad were your oarsmen; your skilled men, Tyre, were aboard as your sailors. |
| 9The ancients of Gebal and the wise men thereof were in thee thy calkers: all the ships of the sea with their mariners were in thee to occupy thy merchandise. | 9Veteran craftsmen of Byblos were on board as shipwrights to caulk your seams. All the ships of the sea and their sailors came alongside to trade for your wares. |
| 10They of Persia and of Lud and of Phut were in thine army, thy men of war: they hanged the shield and helmet in thee; they set forth thy comeliness. | 10"'Men of Persia, Lydia and Put served as soldiers in your army. They hung their shields and helmets on your walls, bringing you splendor. |
| 11The men of Arvad with thine army were upon thy walls round about, and the Gammadims were in thy towers: they hanged their shields upon thy walls round about; they have made thy beauty perfect. | 11Men of Arvad and Helek guarded your walls on every side; men of Gammad were in your towers. They hung their shields around your walls; they brought your beauty to perfection. |
| 12Tarshish was thy merchant by reason of the multitude of all kind of riches; with silver, iron, tin, and lead, they traded in thy fairs. | 12"'Tarshish did business with you because of your great wealth of goods; they exchanged silver, iron, tin and lead for your merchandise. |
| 13Javan, Tubal, and Meshech, they were thy merchants: they traded the persons of men and vessels of brass in thy market. | 13"'Greece, Tubal and Meshek did business with you; they traded human beings and articles of bronze for your wares. |
| 14They of the house of Togarmah traded in thy fairs with horses and horsemen and mules. | 14"'Men of Beth Togarmah exchanged chariot horses, cavalry horses and mules for your merchandise. |
| 15The men of Dedan were thy merchants; many isles were the merchandise of thine hand: they brought thee for a present horns of ivory and ebony. | 15"'The men of Rhodes traded with you, and many coastlands were your customers; they paid you with ivory tusks and ebony. |
| 16Syria was thy merchant by reason of the multitude of the wares of thy making: they occupied in thy fairs with emeralds, purple, and broidered work, and fine linen, and coral, and agate. | 16"'Aram did business with you because of your many products; they exchanged turquoise, purple fabric, embroidered work, fine linen, coral and rubies for your merchandise. |
| 17Judah, and the land of Israel, they were thy merchants: they traded in thy market wheat of Minnith, and Pannag, and honey, and oil, and balm. | 17"'Judah and Israel traded with you; they exchanged wheat from Minnith and confections, honey, olive oil and balm for your wares. |
| 18Damascus was thy merchant in the multitude of the wares of thy making, for the multitude of all riches; in the wine of Helbon, and white wool. | 18"'Damascus did business with you because of your many products and great wealth of goods. They offered wine from Helbon, wool from Zahar |
| 19Dan also and Javan going to and fro occupied in thy fairs: bright iron, cassia, and calamus, were in thy market. | 19and casks of wine from Izal in exchange for your wares: wrought iron, cassia and calamus. |
| 20Dedan was thy merchant in precious clothes for chariots. | 20"'Dedan traded in saddle blankets with you. |
| 21Arabia, and all the princes of Kedar, they occupied with thee in lambs, and rams, and goats: in these were they thy merchants. | 21"'Arabia and all the princes of Kedar were your customers; they did business with you in lambs, rams and goats. |
| 22The merchants of Sheba and Raamah, they were thy merchants: they occupied in thy fairs with chief of all spices, and with all precious stones, and gold. | 22"'The merchants of Sheba and Raamah traded with you; for your merchandise they exchanged the finest of all kinds of spices and precious stones, and gold. |
| 23Haran, and Canneh, and Eden, the merchants of Sheba, Asshur, and Chilmad, were thy merchants. | 23"'Harran, Kanneh and Eden and merchants of Sheba, Ashur and Kilmad traded with you. |
| 24These were thy merchants in all sorts of things, in blue clothes, and broidered work, and in chests of rich apparel, bound with cords, and made of cedar, among thy merchandise. | 24In your marketplace they traded with you beautiful garments, blue fabric, embroidered work and multicolored rugs with cords twisted and tightly knotted. |
| 25The ships of Tarshish did sing of thee in thy market: and thou wast replenished, and made very glorious in the midst of the seas. | 25"'The ships of Tarshish serve as carriers for your wares. You are filled with heavy cargo as you sail the sea. |
| 26Thy rowers have brought thee into great waters: the east wind hath broken thee in the midst of the seas. | 26Your oarsmen take you out to the high seas. But the east wind will break you to pieces far out at sea. |
| 27Thy riches, and thy fairs, thy merchandise, thy mariners, and thy pilots, thy calkers, and the occupiers of thy merchandise, and all thy men of war, that are in thee, and in all thy company which is in the midst of thee, shall fall into the midst of the seas in the day of thy ruin. | 27Your wealth, merchandise and wares, your mariners, sailors and shipwrights, your merchants and all your soldiers, and everyone else on board will sink into the heart of the sea on the day of your shipwreck. |
| 28The suburbs shall shake at the sound of the cry of thy pilots. | 28The shorelands will quake when your sailors cry out. |
| 29And all that handle the oar, the mariners, and all the pilots of the sea, shall come down from their ships, they shall stand upon the land; | 29All who handle the oars will abandon their ships; the mariners and all the sailors will stand on the shore. |
| 30And shall cause their voice to be heard against thee, and shall cry bitterly, and shall cast up dust upon their heads, they shall wallow themselves in the ashes: | 30They will raise their voice and cry bitterly over you; they will sprinkle dust on their heads and roll in ashes. |
| 31And they shall make themselves utterly bald for thee, and gird them with sackcloth, and they shall weep for thee with bitterness of heart and bitter wailing. | 31They will shave their heads because of you and will put on sackcloth. They will weep over you with anguish of soul and with bitter mourning. |
| 32And in their wailing they shall take up a lamentation for thee, and lament over thee, saying, What city is like Tyrus, like the destroyed in the midst of the sea? | 32As they wail and mourn over you, they will take up a lament concerning you: "Who was ever silenced like Tyre, surrounded by the sea?" |
| 33When thy wares went forth out of the seas, thou filledst many people; thou didst enrich the kings of the earth with the multitude of thy riches and of thy merchandise. | 33When your merchandise went out on the seas, you satisfied many nations; with your great wealth and your wares you enriched the kings of the earth. |
| 34In the time when thou shalt be broken by the seas in the depths of the waters thy merchandise and all thy company in the midst of thee shall fall. | 34Now you are shattered by the sea in the depths of the waters; your wares and all your company have gone down with you. |
| 35All the inhabitants of the isles shall be astonished at thee, and their kings shall be sore afraid, they shall be troubled in their countenance. | 35All who live in the coastlands are appalled at you; their kings shudder with horror and their faces are distorted with fear. |
| 36The merchants among the people shall hiss at thee; thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt be any more. | 36The merchants among the nations scoff at you; you have come to a horrible end and will be no more.'" |
