King James Bible | New International Version |
These are now the chief of their fathers, and this is the genealogy of them that went up with me from Babylon, in the reign of Artaxerxes the king. | 1These are the family heads and those registered with them who came up with me from Babylon during the reign of King Artaxerxes: |

Of the sons of Pahathmoab; Elihoenai the son of Zerahiah, and with him two hundred males. | 4of the descendants of Pahath-Moab, Eliehoenai son of Zerahiah, and with him 200 men; |
Of the sons of Shechaniah; the son of Jahaziel, and with him three hundred males. | 5of the descendants of Zattu, Shekaniah son of Jahaziel, and with him 300 men; |
Of the sons also of Adin; Ebed the son of Jonathan, and with him fifty males. | 6of the descendants of Adin, Ebed son of Jonathan, and with him 50 men; |
And of the sons of Elam; Jeshaiah the son of Athaliah, and with him seventy males. | 7of the descendants of Elam, Jeshaiah son of Athaliah, and with him 70 men; |
And of the sons of Shephatiah; Zebadiah the son of Michael, and with him fourscore males. | 8of the descendants of Shephatiah, Zebadiah son of Michael, and with him 80 men; |
Of the sons of Joab; Obadiah the son of Jehiel, and with him two hundred and eighteen males. | 9of the descendants of Joab, Obadiah son of Jehiel, and with him 218 men; |
And of the sons of Shelomith; the son of Josiphiah, and with him an hundred and threescore males. | 10of the descendants of Bani, Shelomith son of Josiphiah, and with him 160 men; |
And of the sons of Bebai; Zechariah the son of Bebai, and with him twenty and eight males. | 11of the descendants of Bebai, Zechariah son of Bebai, and with him 28 men; |
And of the sons of Azgad; Johanan the son of Hakkatan, and with him an hundred and ten males. | 12of the descendants of Azgad, Johanan son of Hakkatan, and with him 110 men; |
And of the last sons of Adonikam, whose names are these, Eliphelet, Jeiel, and Shemaiah, and with them threescore males. | 13of the descendants of Adonikam, the last ones, whose names were Eliphelet, Jeuel and Shemaiah, and with them 60 men; |
Of the sons also of Bigvai; Uthai, and Zabbud, and with them seventy males. | 14of the descendants of Bigvai, Uthai and Zakkur, and with them 70 men. |
And I gathered them together to the river that runneth to Ahava; and there abode we in tents three days: and I viewed the people, and the priests, and found there none of the sons of Levi. | 15I assembled them at the canal that flows toward Ahava, and we camped there three days. When I checked among the people and the priests, I found no Levites there. |
Then sent I for Eliezer, for Ariel, for Shemaiah, and for Elnathan, and for Jarib, and for Elnathan, and for Nathan, and for Zechariah, and for Meshullam, chief men; also for Joiarib, and for Elnathan, men of understanding. | 16So I summoned Eliezer, Ariel, Shemaiah, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zechariah and Meshullam, who were leaders, and Joiarib and Elnathan, who were men of learning, |
And I sent them with commandment unto Iddo the chief at the place Casiphia, and I told them what they should say unto Iddo, and to his brethren the Nethinims, at the place Casiphia, that they should bring unto us ministers for the house of our God. | 17and I ordered them to go to Iddo, the leader in Kasiphia. I told them what to say to Iddo and his fellow Levites, the temple servants in Kasiphia, so that they might bring attendants to us for the house of our God. |
And by the good hand of our God upon us they brought us a man of understanding, of the sons of Mahli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel; and Sherebiah, with his sons and his brethren, eighteen; | 18Because the gracious hand of our God was on us, they brought us Sherebiah, a capable man, from the descendants of Mahli son of Levi, the son of Israel, and Sherebiah's sons and brothers, 18 in all; |
And Hashabiah, and with him Jeshaiah of the sons of Merari, his brethren and their sons, twenty; | 19and Hashabiah, together with Jeshaiah from the descendants of Merari, and his brothers and nephews, 20 in all. |
Also of the Nethinims, whom David and the princes had appointed for the service of the Levites, two hundred and twenty Nethinims: all of them were expressed by name. | 20They also brought 220 of the temple servants--a body that David and the officials had established to assist the Levites. All were registered by name. |
Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance. | 21There, by the Ahava Canal, I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask him for a safe journey for us and our children, with all our possessions. |
For I was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him. | 22I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen to protect us from enemies on the road, because we had told the king, "The gracious hand of our God is on everyone who looks to him, but his great anger is against all who forsake him." |
So we fasted and besought our God for this: and he was intreated of us. | 23So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and he answered our prayer. |
Then I separated twelve of the chief of the priests, Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and ten of their brethren with them, | 24Then I set apart twelve of the leading priests, namely, Sherebiah, Hashabiah and ten of their brothers, |
And weighed unto them the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, even the offering of the house of our God, which the king, and his counsellers, and his lords, and all Israel there present, had offered: | 25and I weighed out to them the offering of silver and gold and the articles that the king, his advisers, his officials and all Israel present there had donated for the house of our God. |
I even weighed unto their hand six hundred and fifty talents of silver, and silver vessels an hundred talents, and of gold an hundred talents; | 26I weighed out to them 650 talents of silver, silver articles weighing 100 talents, 100 talents of gold, |
Also twenty basons of gold, of a thousand drams; and two vessels of fine copper, precious as gold. | 2720 bowls of gold valued at 1,000 darics, and two fine articles of polished bronze, as precious as gold. |
And I said unto them, Ye are holy unto the LORD; the vessels are holy also; and the silver and the gold are a freewill offering unto the LORD God of your fathers. | 28I said to them, "You as well as these articles are consecrated to the LORD. The silver and gold are a freewill offering to the LORD, the God of your ancestors. |
Watch ye, and keep them, until ye weigh them before the chief of the priests and the Levites, and chief of the fathers of Israel, at Jerusalem, in the chambers of the house of the LORD. | 29Guard them carefully until you weigh them out in the chambers of the house of the LORD in Jerusalem before the leading priests and the Levites and the family heads of Israel." |
So took the priests and the Levites the weight of the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, to bring them to Jerusalem unto the house of our God. | 30Then the priests and Levites received the silver and gold and sacred articles that had been weighed out to be taken to the house of our God in Jerusalem. |
Then we departed from the river of Ahava on the twelfth day of the first month, to go unto Jerusalem: and the hand of our God was upon us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy, and of such as lay in wait by the way. | 31On the twelfth day of the first month we set out from the Ahava Canal to go to Jerusalem. The hand of our God was on us, and he protected us from enemies and bandits along the way. |
And we came to Jerusalem, and abode there three days. | 32So we arrived in Jerusalem, where we rested three days. |
Now on the fourth day was the silver and the gold and the vessels weighed in the house of our God by the hand of Meremoth the son of Uriah the priest; and with him was Eleazar the son of Phinehas; and with them was Jozabad the son of Jeshua, and Noadiah the son of Binnui, Levites; | 33On the fourth day, in the house of our God, we weighed out the silver and gold and the sacred articles into the hands of Meremoth son of Uriah, the priest. Eleazar son of Phinehas was with him, and so were the Levites Jozabad son of Jeshua and Noadiah son of Binnui. |
By number and by weight of every one: and all the weight was written at that time. | 34Everything was accounted for by number and weight, and the entire weight was recorded at that time. |
Also the children of those that had been carried away, which were come out of the captivity, offered burnt offerings unto the God of Israel, twelve bullocks for all Israel, ninety and six rams, seventy and seven lambs, twelve he goats for a sin offering: all this was a burnt offering unto the LORD. | 35Then the exiles who had returned from captivity sacrificed burnt offerings to the God of Israel: twelve bulls for all Israel, ninety-six rams, seventy-seven male lambs and, as a sin offering, twelve male goats. All this was a burnt offering to the LORD. |
And they delivered the king's commissions unto the king's lieutenants, and to the governors on this side the river: and they furthered the people, and the house of God. | 36They also delivered the king's orders to the royal satraps and to the governors of Trans-Euphrates, who then gave assistance to the people and to the house of God. |
