KJV Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
King James BibleNew Living Translation
And God spake all these words, saying,1Then God gave the people all these instructions :
I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.2“I am the LORD your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery.
Thou shalt have no other gods before me.3“You must not have any other god but me.
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:4“You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea.
Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;5You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me.
And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.6But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands.
Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.7“You must not misuse the name of the LORD your God. The LORD will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.8“Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:9You have six days each week for your ordinary work,
But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:10but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the LORD your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living among you.
For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.11For in six days the LORD made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.
Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.12“Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
Thou shalt not kill.13“You must not murder.
Thou shalt not commit adultery.14“You must not commit adultery.
Thou shalt not steal.15“You must not steal.
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.16“You must not testify falsely against your neighbor.
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.17“You must not covet your neighbor’s house. You must not covet your neighbor’s wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.”
And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.18When the people heard the thunder and the loud blast of the ram’s horn, and when they saw the flashes of lightning and the smoke billowing from the mountain, they stood at a distance, trembling with fear.
And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die.19And they said to Moses, “You speak to us, and we will listen. But don’t let God speak directly to us, or we will die!”
And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.20“Don’t be afraid,” Moses answered them, “for God has come in this way to test you, and so that your fear of him will keep you from sinning!”
And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.21As the people stood in the distance, Moses approached the dark cloud where God was. Proper Use of Altars
And the LORD said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have talked with you from heaven.22And the LORD said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: You saw for yourselves that I spoke to you from heaven.
Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold.23Remember, you must not make any idols of silver or gold to rival me.
An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.24“Build for me an altar made of earth, and offer your sacrifices to me—your burnt offerings and peace offerings, your sheep and goats, and your cattle. Build my altar wherever I cause my name to be remembered, and I will come to you and bless you.
And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it.25If you use stones to build my altar, use only natural, uncut stones. Do not shape the stones with a tool, for that would make the altar unfit for holy use.
Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon.26And do not approach my altar by going up steps. If you do, someone might look up under your clothing and see your nakedness.
