Hebrews 5
KJV Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT GRK]
King James BibleNew Living Translation
For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins:1Every high priest is a man chosen to represent other people in their dealings with God. He presents their gifts to God and offers sacrifices for their sins.
Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity.2And he is able to deal gently with ignorant and wayward people because he himself is subject to the same weaknesses.
And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins.3That is why he must offer sacrifices for his own sins as well as theirs.
And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.4And no one can become a high priest simply because he wants such an honor. He must be called by God for this work, just as Aaron was.
So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.5That is why Christ did not honor himself by assuming he could become High Priest. No, he was chosen by God, who said to him, “You are my Son. Today I have become your Father. ”
As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.6And in another passage God said to him, “You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.”
Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;7While Jesus was here on earth, he offered prayers and pleadings, with a loud cry and tears, to the one who could rescue him from death. And God heard his prayers because of his deep reverence for God.
Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;8Even though Jesus was God’s Son, he learned obedience from the things he suffered.
And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;9In this way, God qualified him as a perfect High Priest, and he became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey him.
Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec.10And God designated him to be a High Priest in the order of Melchizedek. A Call to Spiritual Growth
Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.11There is much more we would like to say about this, but it is difficult to explain, especially since you are spiritually dull and don’t seem to listen.
For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.12You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food.
For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.13For someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn’t know how to do what is right.
But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.14Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong.
