Moreover the LORD answered Job, and said, | 1Then the LORD said to Job, |
Shall he that contendeth with the Almighty instruct him? he that reproveth God, let him answer it. | 2“Do you still want to argue with the Almighty? You are God’s critic, but do you have the answers?” Job Responds to the LORD |
Then Job answered the LORD, and said, | 3Then Job replied to the LORD, |
Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer thee? I will lay mine hand upon my mouth. | 4“I am nothing—how could I ever find the answers? I will cover my mouth with my hand. |
Once have I spoken; but I will not answer: yea, twice; but I will proceed no further. | 5I have said too much already. I have nothing more to say.” The LORD Challenges Job Again |
Then answered the LORD unto Job out of the whirlwind, and said, | 6Then the LORD answered Job from the whirlwind: |
Gird up thy loins now like a man: I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me. | 7“Brace yourself like a man, because I have some questions for you, and you must answer them. |
Wilt thou also disannul my judgment? wilt thou condemn me, that thou mayest be righteous? | 8“Will you discredit my justice and condemn me just to prove you are right? |
Hast thou an arm like God? or canst thou thunder with a voice like him? | 9Are you as strong as God? Can you thunder with a voice like his? |
Deck thyself now with majesty and excellency; and array thyself with glory and beauty. | 10All right, put on your glory and splendor, your honor and majesty. |
Cast abroad the rage of thy wrath: and behold every one that is proud, and abase him. | 11Give vent to your anger. Let it overflow against the proud. |
Look on every one that is proud, and bring him low; and tread down the wicked in their place. | 12Humiliate the proud with a glance; walk on the wicked where they stand. |
Hide them in the dust together; and bind their faces in secret. | 13Bury them in the dust. Imprison them in the world of the dead. |
Then will I also confess unto thee that thine own right hand can save thee. | 14Then even I would praise you, for your own strength would save you. |
Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox. | 15“Take a look at Behemoth, which I made, just as I made you. It eats grass like an ox. |
Lo now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly. | 16See its powerful loins and the muscles of its belly. |
He moveth his tail like a cedar: the sinews of his stones are wrapped together. | 17Its tail is as strong as a cedar. The sinews of its thighs are knit tightly together. |
His bones are as strong pieces of brass; his bones are like bars of iron. | 18Its bones are tubes of bronze. Its limbs are bars of iron. |
He is the chief of the ways of God: he that made him can make his sword to approach unto him. | 19It is a prime example of God’s handiwork, and only its Creator can threaten it. |
Surely the mountains bring him forth food, where all the beasts of the field play. | 20The mountains offer it their best food, where all the wild animals play. |
He lieth under the shady trees, in the covert of the reed, and fens. | 21It lies under the lotus plants, hidden by the reeds in the marsh. |
The shady trees cover him with their shadow; the willows of the brook compass him about. | 22The lotus plants give it shade among the willows beside the stream. |
Behold, he drinketh up a river, and hasteth not: he trusteth that he can draw up Jordan into his mouth. | 23It is not disturbed by the raging river, not concerned when the swelling Jordan rushes around it. |
He taketh it with his eyes: his nose pierceth through snares. | 24No one can catch it off guard or put a ring in its nose and lead it away. |
