Then Job continued his discourse and said, | 1Job continued his discourse: |
"As God lives, who has taken away my right, And the Almighty, who has embittered my soul, | 2“As surely as God lives, who has deprived me of justice—the Almighty, who has embittered my soul— |
For as long as life is in me, And the breath of God is in my nostrils, | 3as long as my breath is still within me and the breath of God remains in my nostrils, |
My lips certainly will not speak unjustly, Nor will my tongue mutter deceit. | 4my lips will not speak wickedness, and my tongue will not utter deceit. |
"Far be it from me that I should declare you right; Till I die I will not put away my integrity from me. | 5I will never say that you are right; I will maintain my integrity until I die. |
"I hold fast my righteousness and will not let it go. My heart does not reproach any of my days. | 6I will cling to my righteousness and never let go. As long as I live, my conscience will not accuse me. |
"May my enemy be as the wicked And my opponent as the unjust. | 7May my enemy be like the wicked and my opponent like the unjust. |
"For what is the hope of the godless when he is cut off, When God requires his life? | 8For what is the hope of the godless when he is cut off, when God takes away his life? |
"Will God hear his cry When distress comes upon him? | 9Will God hear his cry when distress comes upon him? |
"Will he take delight in the Almighty? Will he call on God at all times? | 10Will he delight in the Almighty? Will he call upon God at all times? |
"I will instruct you in the power of God; What is with the Almighty I will not conceal. | 11I will instruct you in the power of God. I will not conceal the ways of the Almighty. |
"Behold, all of you have seen it; Why then do you act foolishly? | 12Surely all of you have seen it for yourselves. Why then do you keep up this empty talk? |
"This is the portion of a wicked man from God, And the inheritance which tyrants receive from the Almighty. | 13This is the wicked man’s portion from God—the heritage the ruthless receive from the Almighty. |
"Though his sons are many, they are destined for the sword; And his descendants will not be satisfied with bread. | 14Though his sons are many, they are destined for the sword; and his offspring will never have enough food. |
"His survivors will be buried because of the plague, And their widows will not be able to weep. | 15His survivors will be buried by the plague, and their widows will not weep for them. |
"Though he piles up silver like dust And prepares garments as plentiful as the clay, | 16Though he heaps up silver like dust and piles up a wardrobe like clay, |
He may prepare it, but the just will wear it And the innocent will divide the silver. | 17what he lays up, the righteous will wear, and his silver will be divided by the innocent. |
"He has built his house like the spider's web, Or as a hut which the watchman has made. | 18The house he built is like a moth’s cocoon, like a hut set up by a watchman. |
"He lies down rich, but never again; He opens his eyes, and it is no longer. | 19He lies down wealthy, but will do so no more; when he opens his eyes, all is gone. |
"Terrors overtake him like a flood; A tempest steals him away in the night. | 20Terrors overtake him like a flood; a tempest sweeps him away in the night. |
"The east wind carries him away, and he is gone, For it whirls him away from his place. | 21The east wind carries him away, and he is gone; it sweeps him out of his place. |
"For it will hurl at him without sparing; He will surely try to flee from its power. | 22It hurls itself against him without mercy as he flees headlong from its power. |
"Men will clap their hands at him And will hiss him from his place. | 23It claps its hands at him and hisses him out of his place. |
