| 1Then Job continued his discourse and said, | 1And Job continued his discourse: |
| 2"As God lives, who has taken away my right, And the Almighty, who has embittered my soul, | 2"As surely as God lives, who has denied me justice, the Almighty, who has made my life bitter, |
| 3For as long as life is in me, And the breath of God is in my nostrils, | 3as long as I have life within me, the breath of God in my nostrils, |
| 4My lips certainly will not speak unjustly, Nor will my tongue mutter deceit. | 4my lips will not say anything wicked, and my tongue will not utter lies. |
| 5"Far be it from me that I should declare you right; Till I die I will not put away my integrity from me. | 5I will never admit you are in the right; till I die, I will not deny my integrity. |
| 6"I hold fast my righteousness and will not let it go. My heart does not reproach any of my days. | 6I will maintain my innocence and never let go of it; my conscience will not reproach me as long as I live. |
| 7"May my enemy be as the wicked And my opponent as the unjust. | 7"May my enemy be like the wicked, my adversary like the unjust! |
| 8"For what is the hope of the godless when he is cut off, When God requires his life? | 8For what hope have the godless when they are cut off, when God takes away their life? |
| 9"Will God hear his cry When distress comes upon him? | 9Does God listen to their cry when distress comes upon them? |
| 10"Will he take delight in the Almighty? Will he call on God at all times? | 10Will they find delight in the Almighty? Will they call on God at all times? |
| 11"I will instruct you in the power of God; What is with the Almighty I will not conceal. | 11"I will teach you about the power of God; the ways of the Almighty I will not conceal. |
| 12"Behold, all of you have seen it; Why then do you act foolishly? | 12You have all seen this yourselves. Why then this meaningless talk? |
| 13"This is the portion of a wicked man from God, And the inheritance which tyrants receive from the Almighty. | 13"Here is the fate God allots to the wicked, the heritage a ruthless man receives from the Almighty: |
| 14"Though his sons are many, they are destined for the sword; And his descendants will not be satisfied with bread. | 14However many his children, their fate is the sword; his offspring will never have enough to eat. |
| 15"His survivors will be buried because of the plague, And their widows will not be able to weep. | 15The plague will bury those who survive him, and their widows will not weep for them. |
| 16"Though he piles up silver like dust And prepares garments as plentiful as the clay, | 16Though he heaps up silver like dust and clothes like piles of clay, |
| 17He may prepare it, but the just will wear it And the innocent will divide the silver. | 17what he lays up the righteous will wear, and the innocent will divide his silver. |
| 18"He has built his house like the spider's web, Or as a hut which the watchman has made. | 18The house he builds is like a moth's cocoon, like a hut made by a watchman. |
| 19"He lies down rich, but never again; He opens his eyes, and it is no longer. | 19He lies down wealthy, but will do so no more; when he opens his eyes, all is gone. |
| 20"Terrors overtake him like a flood; A tempest steals him away in the night. | 20Terrors overtake him like a flood; a tempest snatches him away in the night. |
| 21"The east wind carries him away, and he is gone, For it whirls him away from his place. | 21The east wind carries him off, and he is gone; it sweeps him out of his place. |
| 22"For it will hurl at him without sparing; He will surely try to flee from its power. | 22It hurls itself against him without mercy as he flees headlong from its power. |
| 23"Men will clap their hands at him And will hiss him from his place. | 23It claps its hands in derision and hisses him out of his place." |
