| 1Then Job continued his discourse and said, | 1Job continued his discourse, saying: |
| 2"As God lives, who has taken away my right, And the Almighty, who has embittered my soul, | 2As God lives, who has deprived me of justice, and the Almighty who has made me bitter, |
| 3For as long as life is in me, And the breath of God is in my nostrils, | 3as long as my breath is still in me and the breath from God remains in my nostrils, |
| 4My lips certainly will not speak unjustly, Nor will my tongue mutter deceit. | 4my lips will not speak unjustly, and my tongue will not utter deceit. |
| 5"Far be it from me that I should declare you right; Till I die I will not put away my integrity from me. | 5I will never affirm that you are right. I will maintain my integrity until I die. |
| 6"I hold fast my righteousness and will not let it go. My heart does not reproach any of my days. | 6I will cling to my righteousness and never let it go. My conscience will not accuse me as long as I live! |
| 7"May my enemy be as the wicked And my opponent as the unjust. | 7May my enemy be like the wicked and my opponent like the unjust. |
| 8"For what is the hope of the godless when he is cut off, When God requires his life? | 8For what hope does the godless person have when he is cut off, when God takes away his life? |
| 9"Will God hear his cry When distress comes upon him? | 9Will God hear his cry when distress comes on him? |
| 10"Will he take delight in the Almighty? Will he call on God at all times? | 10Will he delight in the Almighty? Will he call on God at all times? |
| 11"I will instruct you in the power of God; What is with the Almighty I will not conceal. | 11I will teach you about God's power. I will not conceal what the Almighty has planned. |
| 12"Behold, all of you have seen it; Why then do you act foolishly? | 12All of you have seen this for yourselves, why do you keep up this empty talk? |
| 13"This is the portion of a wicked man from God, And the inheritance which tyrants receive from the Almighty. | 13This is a wicked man's lot from God, the inheritance the ruthless receive from the Almighty. |
| 14"Though his sons are many, they are destined for the sword; And his descendants will not be satisfied with bread. | 14Even if his children increase, they are destined for the sword; his descendants will never have enough food. |
| 15"His survivors will be buried because of the plague, And their widows will not be able to weep. | 15Those who survive him will be buried by the plague, yet their widows will not weep for them. |
| 16"Though he piles up silver like dust And prepares garments as plentiful as the clay, | 16Though he piles up silver like dust and heaps up fine clothing like clay-- |
| 17He may prepare it, but the just will wear it And the innocent will divide the silver. | 17he may heap it up, but the righteous will wear it, and the innocent will divide up his silver. |
| 18"He has built his house like the spider's web, Or as a hut which the watchman has made. | 18The house he built is like a moth's cocoon or a shelter set up by a watchman. |
| 19"He lies down rich, but never again; He opens his eyes, and it is no longer. | 19He lies down wealthy, but will do so no more; when he opens his eyes, it is gone. |
| 20"Terrors overtake him like a flood; A tempest steals him away in the night. | 20Terrors overtake him like a flood; a storm wind sweeps him away at night. |
| 21"The east wind carries him away, and he is gone, For it whirls him away from his place. | 21An east wind picks him up, and he is gone; it carries him away from his place. |
| 22"For it will hurl at him without sparing; He will surely try to flee from its power. | 22It blasts at him without mercy, while he flees desperately from its force. |
| 23"Men will clap their hands at him And will hiss him from his place. | 23It claps its hands at him and scoffs at him from its place. |
