| 12They brought the captives and the prey and the spoil to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest and to the congregation of the sons of Israel, to the camp at the plains of Moab, which are by the Jordan opposite Jericho. | 12They brought the prisoners, animals, and spoils of war to Moses, the priest Eleazar, and the Israelite community at the camp on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho. |

| 14Moses was angry with the officers of the army, the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds, who had come from service in the war. | 14But Moses became furious with the officers, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, who were returning from the military campaign. |
| 15And Moses said to them, "Have you spared all the women? | 15"Have you let every female live?" he asked them. |
| 16"Behold, these caused the sons of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to trespass against the LORD in the matter of Peor, so the plague was among the congregation of the LORD. | 16"Yet they are the ones who, at Balaam's advice, incited the Israelites to unfaithfulness against the LORD in the Peor incident, so that the plague came against the LORD's community. |
| 17"Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man intimately. | 17So now, kill every male among the dependents and kill every woman who has gone to bed with a man, |
| 18"But all the girls who have not known man intimately, spare for yourselves. | 18but keep alive for yourselves all the young females who have not gone to bed with a man. |
| 19"And you, camp outside the camp seven days; whoever has killed any person and whoever has touched any slain, purify yourselves, you and your captives, on the third day and on the seventh day. | 19"You are to remain outside the camp for seven days. All of you and your prisoners who have killed a person or touched the dead are to purify yourselves on the third day and the seventh day. |
| 20"You shall purify for yourselves every garment and every article of leather and all the work of goats' hair, and all articles of wood." | 20Also purify everything: garments, leather goods, things made of goat hair, and every article of wood." |
| 21Then Eleazar the priest said to the men of war who had gone to battle, "This is the statute of the law which the LORD has commanded Moses: | 21Then the priest Eleazar said to the soldiers who had gone to battle, "This is the legal statute the LORD commanded Moses: |
| 22only the gold and the silver, the bronze, the iron, the tin and the lead, | 22The gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, and lead-- |
| 23everything that can stand the fire, you shall pass through the fire, and it shall be clean, but it shall be purified with water for impurity. But whatever cannot stand the fire you shall pass through the water. | 23everything that can withstand fire--you are to pass through fire, and it will be clean. It must still be purified with the purification water. Anything that cannot withstand fire, pass through the water. |
| 24"And you shall wash your clothes on the seventh day and be clean, and afterward you may enter the camp." | 24On the seventh day wash your clothes, and you will be clean. After that you may enter the camp." |
| 25Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, | 25The LORD told Moses, |
| 26"You and Eleazar the priest and the heads of the fathers' households of the congregation take a count of the booty that was captured, both of man and of animal; | 26"You, the priest Eleazar, and the family heads of the community are to take a count of what was captured, people and animals. |
| 27and divide the booty between the warriors who went out to battle and all the congregation. | 27Then divide the captives between the troops who went out to war and the entire community. |
| 28"Levy a tax for the LORD from the men of war who went out to battle, one in five hundred of the persons and of the cattle and of the donkeys and of the sheep; | 28Set aside a tribute for the LORD from what belongs to the fighting men who went out to war: one out of every five hundred people, cattle, donkeys, sheep, and goats. |
| 29take it from their half and give it to Eleazar the priest, as an offering to the LORD. | 29Take the tribute from their half and give it to the priest Eleazar as a contribution to the LORD. |
| 30"From the sons of Israel's half, you shall take one drawn out of every fifty of the persons, of the cattle, of the donkeys and of the sheep, from all the animals, and give them to the Levites who keep charge of the tabernacle of the LORD." | 30From the Israelites' half, take one out of every fifty from the people, cattle, donkeys, sheep, and goats, all the livestock, and give them to the Levites who perform the duties of the LORD's tabernacle." |
| 31Moses and Eleazar the priest did just as the LORD had commanded Moses. | 31So Moses and the priest Eleazar did as the LORD commanded Moses. |
| 32Now the booty that remained from the spoil which the men of war had plundered was 675,000 sheep, | 32The captives remaining from the plunder the army had taken totaled: 675,000 sheep and goats, |
| 33and 72,000 cattle, | 3372,000 cattle, |
| 34and 61,000 donkeys, | 3461,000 donkeys, |
| 35and of human beings, of the women who had not known man intimately, all the persons were 32,000. | 35and 32,000 people, all the females who had not gone to bed with a man. |
| 36The half, the portion of those who went out to war, was as follows: the number of sheep was 337,500, | 36The half portion for those who went out to war numbered: 337,500 sheep and goats, |
| 37and the LORD'S levy of the sheep was 675; | 37and the tribute to the LORD was 675 from the sheep and goats; |
| 38and the cattle were 36,000, from which the LORD'S levy was 72; | 38from the 36,000 cattle, the tribute to the LORD was 72; |
| 39and the donkeys were 30,500, from which the LORD'S levy was 61; | 39from the 30,500 donkeys, the tribute to the LORD was 61; |
| 40and the human beings were 16,000, from whom the LORD'S levy was 32 persons. | 40and from the 16,000 people, the tribute to the LORD was 32 people. |
| 41Moses gave the levy which was the LORD'S offering to Eleazar the priest, just as the LORD had commanded Moses. | 41Moses gave the tribute to the priest Eleazar as a contribution for the LORD, as the LORD had commanded Moses. |
| 42As for the sons of Israel's half, which Moses separated from the men who had gone to war-- | 42From the Israelites' half, which Moses separated from the men who fought, |
| 43now the congregation's half was 337,500 sheep, | 43the community's half was: 337,500 sheep and goats, |
| 44and 36,000 cattle, | 4436,000 cattle, |
| 45and 30,500 donkeys, | 4530,500 donkeys, |
| 46and the human beings were 16,000-- | 46and 16,000 people. |
| 47and from the sons of Israel's half, Moses took one drawn out of every fifty, both of man and of animals, and gave them to the Levites, who kept charge of the tabernacle of the LORD, just as the LORD had commanded Moses. | 47Moses took one out of every fifty, selected from the people and the livestock of the Israelites' half. He gave them to the Levites who perform the duties of the LORD's tabernacle, as the LORD had commanded him. |
| 48Then the officers who were over the thousands of the army, the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds, approached Moses, | 48The officers who were over the thousands of the army, the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, approached Moses |
| 49and they said to Moses, "Your servants have taken a census of men of war who are in our charge, and no man of us is missing. | 49and told him, "Your servants have taken a census of the fighting men under our command, and not one of us is missing. |
| 50"So we have brought as an offering to the LORD what each man found, articles of gold, armlets and bracelets, signet rings, earrings and necklaces, to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD." | 50So we have presented to the LORD an offering of the gold articles each man found--armlets, bracelets, rings, earrings, and necklaces--to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD." |
| 51Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from them, all kinds of wrought articles. | 51Moses and the priest Eleazar received from them all the articles made out of gold. |
| 52All the gold of the offering which they offered up to the LORD, from the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds, was 16,750 shekels. | 52All the gold of the contribution they offered to the LORD, from the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, was 420 pounds. |
| 53The men of war had taken booty, every man for himself. | 53Each of the soldiers had taken plunder for himself. |
| 54So Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it to the tent of meeting as a memorial for the sons of Israel before the LORD. | 54Moses and the priest Eleazar received the gold from the commanders of thousands and of hundreds and brought it into the tent of meeting as a memorial for the Israelites before the LORD. |
