For the choir director. A Psalm of David. Hear my voice, O God, in my complaint; Preserve my life from dread of the enemy. | 1Hear my voice, O God, in my complaint; preserve my life from dread of the enemy. |
Hide me from the secret counsel of evildoers, From the tumult of those who do iniquity, | 2Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked, from the throng of evildoers, |
Who have sharpened their tongue like a sword. They aimed bitter speech as their arrow, | 3who whet their tongues like swords, who aim bitter words like arrows, |
To shoot from concealment at the blameless; Suddenly they shoot at him, and do not fear. | 4shooting from ambush at the blameless, shooting at him suddenly and without fear. |
They hold fast to themselves an evil purpose; They talk of laying snares secretly; They say, "Who can see them?" | 5They hold fast to their evil purpose; they talk of laying snares secretly, thinking, “Who can see them?” |
They devise injustices, saying, "We are ready with a well-conceived plot"; For the inward thought and the heart of a man are deep. | 6They search out injustice, saying, “We have accomplished a diligent search.” For the inward mind and heart of a man are deep. |
But God will shoot at them with an arrow; Suddenly they will be wounded. | 7But God shoots his arrow at them; they are wounded suddenly. |
So they will make him stumble; Their own tongue is against them; All who see them will shake the head. | 8They are brought to ruin, with their own tongues turned against them; all who see them will wag their heads. |
Then all men will fear, And they will declare the work of God, And will consider what He has done. | 9Then all mankind fears; they tell what God has brought about and ponder what he has done. |
The righteous man will be glad in the LORD and will take refuge in Him; And all the upright in heart will glory. | 10Let the righteous one rejoice in the LORD and take refuge in him! Let all the upright in heart exult! |
