For the choir director. A Psalm of David. Hear my voice, O God, in my complaint; Preserve my life from dread of the enemy. | 1For the music director; a psalm of David. Listen to me, O God, as I offer my lament! Protect my life from the enemy's terrifying attacks. |
Hide me from the secret counsel of evildoers, From the tumult of those who do iniquity, | 2Hide me from the plots of evil men, from the crowd of evildoers. |
Who have sharpened their tongue like a sword. They aimed bitter speech as their arrow, | 3They sharpen their tongues like a sword; they aim their arrow, a slanderous charge, |
To shoot from concealment at the blameless; Suddenly they shoot at him, and do not fear. | 4in order to shoot down the innocent in secluded places. They shoot at him suddenly and are unafraid of retaliation. |
They hold fast to themselves an evil purpose; They talk of laying snares secretly; They say, "Who can see them?" | 5They encourage one another to carry out their evil deed. They plan how to hide snares, and boast, "Who will see them?" |
They devise injustices, saying, "We are ready with a well-conceived plot"; For the inward thought and the heart of a man are deep. | 6They devise unjust schemes; they disguise a well-conceived plot. Man's inner thoughts cannot be discovered. |
But God will shoot at them with an arrow; Suddenly they will be wounded. | 7But God will shoot at them; suddenly they will be wounded by an arrow. |
So they will make him stumble; Their own tongue is against them; All who see them will shake the head. | 8Their slander will bring about their demise. All who see them will shudder, |
Then all men will fear, And they will declare the work of God, And will consider what He has done. | 9and all people will fear. They will proclaim what God has done, and reflect on his deeds. |
The righteous man will be glad in the LORD and will take refuge in Him; And all the upright in heart will glory. | 10The godly will rejoice in the LORD and take shelter in him. All the morally upright will boast. |
